THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Really important question

Jaimie says the vocal placement is where your soft palate is. OK.
What do I do if a have a private teacher that says that it needs to be more forward? Should I leave him? Find another teacher or can it somehow go together??
SOS!!
Thanks a million!

Re: Really important question

Well jaime also speaks about putting the sound forward, so id think youd be okay. my voiceteacher says the same thing and he has probably the most agile tenorvoice ive ever heard. You should place the voice in the soft palate and focus the sound forward hence the buzzing teeth that jaime is talking about it's the same thing as forward placement.

Re: Really important question

Think about pitching the sound above the soft palate to the front of your face, between your eyes. Watch Melissa Cross' placement exercice on at: www.thevoicecouncil.com

Re: Really important question

Just a note to Oiselle's post above; the voice council site is www.voicecouncil.com (there's no "the" in it).
Cheers, Dave.

Re: Really important question

Your teacher is correct. Place it forward. Jaime is also correct though.

At least when I have it right, I tend to feel a buzz on both my soft and hard palate. If I let either one fade out, then my sound loses resonance: I need both.

Forgive me for saying this, but you don't sound like you're quite advanced enough to be worrying too much about your teacher. If you make progress, and singing becomes easier for your, then you've got an at least okay teacher. Once you've been taking lessons for a while, you'll be able to better judge whether you need to switch teachers or not.

Re: Really important question

As long as you keep it placed in the palate, it is fine to move the positioning around.

Re: Really important question

Maybe I'm not so advanced I'm just an opera singer

Re: Really important question

Just an opera singer??? That's no attitude to have. Singing classical is just as challenging in its own right as singing any other styl. Be proud of what you love to sing!
