THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Any nerds?

Anyone singing opera here or am I the only nerd?

Re: Any nerds?

if my voice was good enough i might have given it a go

Re: Any nerds?

I have a B.A in classical singing but I don`t really practice opera anymore... I prefer to sing with my guitar instead!

Re: Any nerds?

Ive been practicing to a bit of opera lately, just some Bocelli and Pavarotti.... i just need to be in a very patient mood to learn the songs becos it takes me a while to learn the prenounciation of the words...

Re: Any nerds?

I'm studying opera at my university, but I like to sing folk music better :).

Re: Any nerds?

And do you guys yous the techniques to sing opera? Are there certain exercises that are better/not so better
for the classic sound?
Thanks!!

Re: Any nerds?

I mainly just try and get the most open, resonant sound i can with a slightly lowered larynx... i can only get to a G4 with that big sound though, after that it just starts sounding like me lol
But i am a baritone, so i guess thats about right.

Re: Any nerds?

I just try to sound open and I blend together upper and lower resonance to fill out my sound. If I bothered to release some of that 'baggage' I'm sure I could learn to ascend much higher than I typically do (about a G/A4), but I don't really care for the sound of a male voice above an A/B4, so I don't bother. I'm a lyric baritone and I'm told I could probably have a pretty good tenor extension... but I'm not really working for it, so maybe, maybe not :).

I'm not a huge tenor fan :p. I do love how baritones sound, though.

Re: Any nerds?

My teacher studied opera. My coaches name is Jim Gillette.

Re: Any nerds?

Well I'm a singing neard myself

I'm using the CVT approach...

I would say that besides the basics:

-Yawning sensation (open throat)
-Support
-No Tension in he jaw and lips

You should practice the:

-Squillo (Twang)
-Lowering of the larynx
-Raising of the soft-palate
-Compressed tounge
-(Shape of the lips)

All of the above factors are an essential part of the classical "sound-ideal"
