THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Swallowing on high notes

First thank you Jaime! Thanks to you I have been able to get to a 3 1/2 octave range. I have hit F4 clearly a few times. The problem that I have is that I have an instictive urge to swallow the note when I go into head voice. It gags the note. If I try to push past that, I feel strain, and I stop. The times that I have made it to the high notes have been right after I practiced the siren. I have sang high where I had no strain or pressure, but sometimes I feel like I am singing like Frankie Valie. I have done the bullfrog, but I probely should do it more often. Will this help the problem? Is this more of a mental thing that will go away with practice or am I just doing something wrong? I am hopefull that with practice everything will just kind of work its way out.

Re: Swallowing on high notes

Imagine there is a huge orange, better yet a grapefruit sitting in the back of your throat as you go up in your range. Don't let your larynx come up.

Re: Swallowing on high notes

Also don't look up or reach up for higher notes. Think "down" upon the note, almost as if a small version of you is riding right on top of that floating core of resonance and you are being pushed down on it through the top of your head by a big finger that's using you and the core of resonance as a button; The push button effect from the top upon your core causes you to automatically which causes you push down like going to the bathroom...And it all falls in place ;)

Re: Swallowing on high notes

Thanks guys! You were right, I was forgetting to go low to get high. That did the trick. The resonance excersizes helped a lot too.
