THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Vowel modification

Hello all,
I recently read the Myles Kennedy interview (which was great!) and he spoke about modifying the vowel sounds as you go up your range. He mentioned a few examples -

"It’s all a matter of how you manipulate the vowels as you ascend. A goes to uh, ah goes to oh, e goes to a. It’s not that simple unfortunately.."

Does anyone know the rest?

Re: Vowel modification

Yes I do, and it's in RYV II. In fact if you own RYV 1st edition, there is a section in there that briefly discusses it. If you want a more in-depth view, try finding books by Herbert Chesari.

Re: Vowel modification

Thanks JonnyP! I guess vowel modification seems natural as you go up in your range to allow the larynx and its constrictors to pull the vocal cords properly. This is necessary as soon as you pass your passagio and go into your head voice.

Re: Vowel modification

Books by Berton Coffin deal EXTENSIVELY with vowel modification, even moreso than Caesari does. They are a bit hard to read, but he presents a very interesting way of thinking about the voice. Richard Miller often talks about vowel modification too, so check out some of his books.

Re: Vowel modification

all vowels either descend from ooh as in food or ee as in feed.

here are the trees

ooh (as in food) u (as in put) uh (as in fudge)
ooh (as in food) to oh (as in bone) ah (as in father)

ee (as in feed) to i (as in it) to eh (as in pen)
ee (as in feed) to ay (as in pay) to aah (as in add)

hope that makes sense

Re: Vowel modification

I have a book called Secrets of Singing by Jeffery Allen and it actually has a big vowel modification poster thats kind of cool. It shows you how each vowel modifies. Its a good book too so you might want to check that out.
