THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Finished sound

First I would just like to say "Hi" to all the members as I am new to this message board.

As for my my question, I would like to know if anyone could give me any advice as to how to get a more professional and a more 'finished' sound. More complete.

I was taping myself singing a song along with the singer on the cd, and I just sounded like a person singing. It sounds like my speaking voice just on different notes. The singer however, had more to her voice. It's a better quality and more finished. I don't know how else to describe it.

What am I lacking? Its seems like the difference between an amature and a pro. I want a professional singing career, but my voice is missing that something.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about i'd love to here your thoughts and advice.

Thankyou

Nadia

Re: Finished sound

Welcome!

I sounds like it has to do with opening your larynx to get a fuller sound. Practice the bullfrog exercises and make sure to open your mouth with the yawn sensation. Focus your voice high up in your forhead and accentuation the words, use dynamics in you interpretation of the song. That is quite a complex question but I hope this tiny bit of advice will help

Re: Finished sound

Thankyou for your help Oiselle. I will definately take your advice.
All the best

Re: Finished sound

I know exactly what you're talking about. When I sing rock, with grit and a little more pressure, I tend to get a "finished sound". If I'm singing something softer, I sometimes do not feel satisfied with the outcome. It sounds sometimes too timid, and the enunciation of certain consonants and syllables tends to make my singing note waver by a fraction. You need to sit down and really analyze what you don't like about the sound. For me its stringing together words singing a soft melody, singing loud full voice then immediately going into falsetto, sometimes sending the sound into the nose unintentionally...all these things for me make me sound less "professional". Luckily, I'm working out all these kinks with a teacher.

If you're having trouble identifying the problem then it will be that much harder to fix.
