THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

A quote I made up.

"Those who can teach, those who can't criticize."

It's a variation on the quote "Those who can do, those who can't teach." To me that statement is really off the mark. I think some of the greatest "doers" are also some of the greatest teachers.

For example in football, Terrell Owens had the priviledge of playing with Jerry Rice in San Francisco. Say what you want about Owen's personality but Jerry Rice had a huge influence in making Terrell one of the greatest recievers in the game today. He was a teacher. The same thing can be said about the effect Randy Moss has had on the Patriots recieving core. It's more than just the skills he brings to the football field. It's also his knowledge that he brings to the locker room.

This relates to musicians many ways. I always seek to find musicians who are better than me and willing to share their knowledge. Almost everything I learned in music I learned from somewhere else. Either from jamming with people or trying to sing or play guitar with the greats. And I still have a long way to go.

There is no such thing as a self-taught musician.
Unless you were put on an island in isolation and given an instrument you will learn from someone, somewhere. And even if you where isolated on that island, you would learn from nature.

The point of this post is simply to say seek knowledge from where ever you can and from who ever you can.

Sorry for the hippie rant, I just got done with yoga class!

Re: A quote I made up.

i think the main reason they say that is because if you arent a natural it forces you to think yer way through it and by doing that you find successful ways of doing that that you can teach to others. rob halford to me is the best but i doubt he would be able to teach me cuz he doesnt really do anything to build his voice. on the other hand you have Jaime here who went through the painstaking process of finding ways to build his own voice and thus taught it to us. odviously its a good system which is why we are all posting on here

Re: A quote I made up.

That's an interesting quote... I've never heard it in that format before.

What I've heard is, "Those who can't do, teach."

Which I frankly think is utter bullshit... my teacher is fantastic, and although her voice has some issues, she hasn't been training -any- of those problems 'into' my voice.

I also know another voice teacher here who, when you hear him sing, you would almost think has had very little training himself. But his students sound AMAZING, and he is an absolute vocal health dictionary on legs... he knows just about everything.
