THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Disturbing larynx-tension and a lack of resonance

Hi all!

I've really come far vocally if I compare this year to the previous, and that feels awesome, but right now I'm stuck.

Lately (the past 1-2 weeks) I've been experiencing tension beneath the chin and in the larynx-area.
I've tried humming, lip-bubbles, stretching, rubbing, pretty much the whole vocal stress release program, but the tension is still there.

I have been lazy about my warm ups recently, because my voice have been in really good condition and I didn't feel like I needed to warm up as much as earlier. And yeah, I really regret thinking those idiotic thoughts..

The last times I've been singing, I've felt that there's been a lack of resonance in my upper range, and my high notes has been really sharp without any depth, and I assume that this is a result of the tension, which is a result of the bad vocal habits I've had recently.

Do anyone have any advice on how to get rid of this tension? I will take a break from singing, but is there anything I can do to recover faster?

Thanks a lot!

Do own Jaime's Raise Your Voice? There is a great Stress Release program in there that you might benefit from... Have a look

Re: Disturbing larynx-tension and a lack of resonance

Well I definitely recommend the stress release, make sure you take as long as you need to on each stretch exercise to try and feel a release. It could be that your just letting tension come in, that starts to stack ontop of each other. Once it starts and isn't fixed immediately it starts to effect other things, till you eventually get in a cycle of bad habit singing. So when you feel yourself tensing you definitely want to stop what your doing and make sure you take a few breath's to help relax urself and maybe even massage a bit or perhaps go on a more confortable note.

Remember your going to have some off days, you don't want to push it on these days trust me. You will thank yourself that you did the next day.

Re: Disturbing larynx-tension and a lack of resonance

Thanks for the advice, but as I wrote earlier, I have been doing the entire stress release program without any noticeable change.
I've been stretching and humming pretty much the entire day, and I hope that it will show.

I'm not going to sing anything this weekend, only do exercises that might be good for releasing tension.
Does that sound like a good idea, or should I keep my mouth shut instead?

Re: Disturbing larynx-tension and a lack of resonance

Sure; take a break; don't stress yourself out about it.

You can also try singing lying your on back. Or bend forward and sing with your head down to change the dynamics and release the stress in your neck. Do you exercise? You can also do a few sit ups (well 1/2 sit ups are better). I always find that putting my hands behind my neck and gently pulling to sit up stretches and relaxes my neck. Or ask your girlfriend to give you a neck massage That always works!

Re: Disturbing larynx-tension and a lack of resonance

Thanks a lot!
I followed your advice and bent forward, and also about the massage, and it felt really nice

I dedicated this entire day to the stress release program, and it worked wonders! I did the entire program 2-3 times and afterwards I did the falsetto slide exercise, the transcending tone and the siren, and my voice is fit for fight!
I've still got some tension around the neck and throat, but I think I will manage to get rid of it by keep doing the stress release.

Thanks for all your advice, and thanks Jaime for your excellent exercises.
