THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Siren Exercise Questions

Am I doing this right?

Siren Example

I've noticed a few things here, that I get much louder when I sing higher, and there seems to be some grit on the higher part.

One thing that really bothers me about my voice is that my higher range sounds really "young" or "childlike" if that makes any sense. How can I fix this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Siren Exercise Questions

Sorry buddy the link you posted doesn't seem to be working atleast not for me.

Re: Siren Exercise Questions

See if this one works.

Re: Siren Exercise Questions

Hey! What you are doing is right, but it seems to me you are doing the stretches insted of the standard siren. The only thing that worries me a bit is the unintentional grit you talk about, you may be twanging (shaping your epiglottis in a way that makes it sound sharper) excessively resulting in distortion or you could be forcing your voice !!! both should be avoided while doing this exercise, and forcing your voice should ALWAYS be avoided!! Now, I personally think it is comfortable to use a sharper sound all the way, but that is up to you... about the sound, well tha takes some time coz first you need to be able to do the desired note with the desired power effortlessly... and then work on the sound color and stuff ...

well.. aim for a CLEAN resonant sound..

Re: Siren Exercise Questions

Hey Dave,
Sounds OK to me too but one thing you might like to try; as you raise the pitch try shaping the vowel from AH to AW to UH ie: AH-AW-UH. That is; AH on the lower part > AW as you hit the middle > UH on the top. Do the reverse coming down. Try it and see how it sounds.
I'm not sure if Jaime will agree with me but it's something that works VERY well for me and really helps with consistency of the sound throughout my range.
Cheers, Dave.

Re: Siren Exercise Questions

Sounds decent. Don't add any grit and maintain the same volume. There is nothing wrong with modifying a vowel but try not to do it for this exercise. If you wan't to use "aw" then do it from the beginning. What's wrong with sounding childlike??? That was when we expressed our voices freely without worrying about a sore throat ;)

Re: Siren Exercise Questions

Thanks for the help! I'll keep all this advice in mind when I am practicing.

Re: Siren Exercise Questions

I'd like to hear any child imitate that sound :P. That's just your upper resonance kicking in. Eventually, once you've gotten the hang of it, you'll probably be able to blend in more lower resonance.

Re: Siren Exercise Questions

I don't think you sound childlike either; you're probably not just used to hearing yourself singing that way. As you go up the scale, push down you chin gently to help your larynx continue its tilting forward. That might help you mix your resonances better.

Re: Siren Exercise Questions

I act childlike, does that count???

Re: Siren Exercise Questions

Thanks again. As I keep working with these exercises it's becoming easier to blend the lower resonances in.

When I think of the sound I want for my higher range, I think of singers like Dio, Russell Allen, and Jeff Scott Soto, so by comparison the sound of my high range is pretty thin.
