THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Help "picking?" out a song? or maybe voicing?

I dont know, Im a guitarist first. Can anyone figure out the notes for Shattered by pantera?

And Jaime, thanks I am already seeing an improvement in the strength of voice and is 1 min 21 seconds good sustain? Thats my MAX, for now. hehe

Thanks

Re: Help "picking?" out a song? or maybe voicing?

I can't help you about the Pantera thing, but 1 min 21 sec is almost INHUMAN. Are you sure you wrote the right thing? :D

Re: Help "picking?" out a song? or maybe voicing?

yes i did. i meant 1 minute 2 seconds! I wouldnt have noticed that, if you wouldnt have said it. thanks though.

Is "picking out" vocal melodies the right terminology?

Thanks

Re: Help "picking?" out a song? or maybe voicing?

I think the term that you're using might be most comparably be related to what Jaime refers to as "song mapping". This is when you literally break down a song's vocal melody into the individual notes.

As a guitarist, I'd recommend that you listen to the song and try to figure out the exact notes with your guitar and then transpose them into a vocal melody once you figure out the "map." You might have to take it very slowly at first, but such is the case with mastering any instrument.

Also, don't try to map out any of Phil Anselmo's super-"growly" screams, because those overtones won't exactly match up with clean guitar notes. I hope I haven't confused you any further, but if I have, lemme know and I'll try to clarify!

Re: Help "picking?" out a song? or maybe voicing?

Thanks!

I am so used to guitar! Ill try "mapping" them out.

You rock!

Thanks!

Re: Help "picking?" out a song? or maybe voicing?

It wont be hard to map out the notes for that song. On the cowboys from hell album, he screams with only distinguishable notes. Its just those weird high screams that are like off the charts. They sound like David Lee roth squeals.

Re: Help "picking?" out a song? or maybe voicing?

OOOW!

Yeah CFH is my favorite pantera album. I like the rest but, for some reason, i like high singing instead of the low growls and stuff. probaby just because i have a moderately high pitched voice myself. i think. actually i just found out it is b below middle c!

Im such a girl

thanks

Re: Help "picking?" out a song? or maybe voicing?

Yeah, CFH is definitely my fav, too. I'm gonna have to go with Cemetery Gates on this one, but the song CFH is pretty bad ass too! I wish I could do that super-sonic shriek he does before the last chorus of the song. (CFH)

Re: Help "picking?" out a song? or maybe voicing?

I'll have to agree, Cemetery Gates is my favorite song by pantera all together.

I'm not good on all the terminology, so I'm using my own redneck symbols and made up words for different effects like slides and stuff.

Thanks,
