THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

mix voice?

hi..
normally i speak at f2-g2.. well after training RYV
for a while and started to sing something.. i noticed
that i start the mixed voice in F3.. if not i will
use that loud chest voice and sound like a opera singer.. lol.

but the mixed voice is so.. i dont know.. sounds like a horn or/and a back street boys voice.. its too softy and gay. there's a way to leave it more heavy? with time i will be able to do this? i'd like to get a more heavier sound.. for example at c4 and upwards my voice is almost sounding like a head voice..
(i'm using sls terms here)

i know in transcending tone my volume is still about 6-7.. i'm trying not to force because my voice sounds like that nay nay nay exercise.
( i'm NOT with high larynx - this is just a connection. i also hear the nay nay sound in some famous singers voice.. i dont know how to explain is like a hold in your voice but does not hurt and feel pain..)

the cool is i can sing in chest voice but i dont want to sound that way if you understand me - too loud or forcing.

it's a balancing act.

any tip?

Re: mix voice?

When you say that you sound like the Backstreet Boys, are you sure you're not singing with a nasal voice? I don't think there should be such an obvious difference in sound going from your chest voice, to your mix voice and to the head voice. The pitch will change of course but the point is to balance all your resonances so there is some kind of consistency between your lower register and your upper register.

Try pinching your nose as you go up your register to prevent your voice from going to much forward. If the sound is altered when you pinch your voice, it is too much forward in your nose. I hope that helps!

Oiselle, that is an awesome tip!!! I'd never thought of that before. I just tried it, and found it very enlightening, and exciting.

Cool! You're welcome

Re: mix voice?

thanks i'll try. and thats true sound like everything
is going to the nose.. i'll try to balance.. maybe
i'm focusing too much in the face or anything up
the chest.

Re: mix voice?

The trick that Oiselle explains about pinching the nose is so true. I've found it out a few years ago and I confirm it helped me a lot to get conscient of where the voice resonance is situated. I also trained to be able to switch from a level to another, it allows me to create a nasal sound when wanted or not. It's a great trick to get control over it :)

Re: mix voice?

You guys this is funny, My last vocal coaching - my teacher made me do the same thing throughout the lesson...... What a wierd coincidence!!!!!!!
