THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Exercise and lesson books

I wish we could do an actual poll here :)
OK so here is my question - most people have ryv
Me included but I am curious about some of the other
material out there.

What are the most productive learning tools available
based on your experiance with them??????

1)
2)
3)

ect ect ect

Re: Exercise and lesson books

Hey Chris,

2 of the other products also belong to Jaime, but my 3 would be

a) Melissa cross's "Zen of Screaming" DVD.
b) Jaime's UBW (Ultimate Breathing Workout)
and c) Jaime's VoiceRx.

As far as Melissa Cross's DVD, you need it to understand the basics behind screaming, but if you REALLY want to learn more about screaming, pick up her "Scream Xtra" CD as well. It's more in depth about the process of "the scream" itself. Before I go on, though, the ZOS DVD also has plenty of great exercises and information about SINGING. It's not ALL about screaming. And as a matter of fact, practicing some of HER techniques actually made some of JAIME'S a little more understandable, or at least explained in a way that I understood a little better. (No offense to Jaime, of course.)

The last thing I'll say about melissa Cross is that she and Jaime don't agree on one thing. Melissa still teaches that screaming comes from the false vocal folds, but Jaime has basically scientifically proven her wrong. Just keep that in mind as well.

I hope I've thrown in at least a little bit of helpful info throughout my rambling:)

Re: Exercise and lesson books

I have

RYV
Ultimate breathing guide.
Jim Gillette's vocal power- CD/DVD
Mark Baxter's - Secrets of screaming- CD

Re: Exercise and lesson books

Obviously Jaime's stuff is good.

Anything by Mark Baxter is great as well. The Secrets of Screaming mp3 builds from a clean tone to a scream systematically within a 20 minute lesson. The Singer's Toolbox DVD gives a ton of information, and his book The Rock N Roll Singer's Survival Manual contains quite a bit of info too. If you buy just 2 vocal books, get Raise Your Voice and Baxter's book. He also has a CD out called Sing Like an Idol, and although its pop/r&b based it will work for any genre.

Other good stuff is:

Rock Your Vox DVD by Rose Coppolla
-this has a DVD plus 2 CDs (one for men,one for women) plus a lot of bonus footage of interviews.

Singing For the Stars by Seth Riggs
-good book and 2 CD set with basic speech level singing technique. not as complete as Brett's but it is a lot cheaper and a lot of it is the same stuff only it doesn't teach style like Brett.

Can You Sing a High C Without Straining?
-good system, very similar to Jaime in a lot of ways.

I think its all just a matter of opinion and finding the materials that explain everything in a way that you can understand. I've tried a few programs that cost quite a bit of money (won't name names), and they have either been pretty bad or even sometimes something half the price is ten times better. On screaminglesson.com, you can get a lot of people's stuff for $20 or under so be sure to check that all out.

Re: Exercise and lesson books

Complete Vocal technique
I think is the best book with theory and info
about the voice. misconceptions about head voice,
mix and other things are solved here. Some exercises
and tips to recognize the modes too. very good.
I cant say the same about the exercises since you
need a cvt teacher to know if you're in the right
track because is very easy to learn bad habits.

Raise your voice
'nuff said

Ultimate breathing workout
(same as above. helped me a lot)

Re: Exercise and lesson books

I used a lot of books before (like the Seth Riggs book)..
but RYV changed completely my technique....awesome!

Re: Exercise and lesson books

I have both RYV as well as UBW I was more curious if you guys supplement them with anything else....
I love both books and use them religously just want to add to my collection without getting confused....
