THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

The heavier your voice type?

The heavier your voice type the more it will be bigger the higher you are?

Also the lighter your voice type the easier it is for agility, riffed phrases?

Also if u have a lighter voice type, is it easier to maintain high notes?

People always tell me I have a heavier voice, but in my head it doesn't really sound that heavy at all. Also my friend told me when I go for my very low notes compared to when I go into a light higher mix it sounds like two different voices. Is this normal?

Re: The heavier your voice type?

These are tonal qualities or colors, that you are reffering to. Don't sweat it. I have a heavier type voice but I can hit soprano, alto and tenor notes better than some of these "categorized singers". Just worked hard and work smart. Just think lighter on the top. You don't have to force it. So if you are a heavier type tonal voice, you can just as easily hit thise highes, if you are willing to work for it ;)

Re: The heavier your voice type?

Thanks for the encouragement, I been trying to do some of david phelps stuff and well thats not happening . I notice when I sing along I end up causing constriction and frustration.

But the other day when I just relaxed I say a little verse of his song where it goes up to a high C, I was able to do it in a mix effortlessly. It was so goofy haha. Now I just need that all the time :)

Re: The heavier your voice type?

Jaime's right. Don't even think about voice classifications.

And yes, it is perfectly normal for your low and high registers to sound different.

Re: The heavier your voice type?

I was curious should you always aim for your voice to be placed in your face? Even in your chest and low chest?

Re: The heavier your voice type?

i dont know... but i'm a bass and speak at E2, F2.. G2.. and i can place in the face. I can say that you'll feel
the sound in the nose even though wont be nasal.

but is possible.. even tough strange

Re: The heavier your voice type?

Wow thats quite low, I definitely don't speak that low. I notice though whenever my voice isn't feeling so great or is tired or misused I talk much lower then I normally do. It also gets a huskier heavier sound to it.

Re: The heavier your voice type?

No, aim your voice to be placed in the palate. The face sensation is just an occuring resonance from the voice. Some teachers miscorrectly force the voice forward into what they call the mask. You don't have to do that. Place it in the palate and you'll feel it in the face.

Re: The heavier your voice type?

Yes I struggle with placement as well but I think (correct me if I'm wrong) really focusing on the resonance hum exercise perfects it, or at least if I am struggling with placement during a piece of music I will stop and do a resonance hum for the line and it corrects it for the most part.
