THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Soft palate

Ok here's the deal ive noticed that when i take my highest notes my Soft palate lowers realy much thus closing off the entire vocal path in the back.

can someone give a tip on how to train it to remain raised?
ive tried the yawn and the big tenor breaths, but they dont seam to do it for me...
always thought i had the palate raised but when i looked in a mirror as i tried to take those highnotes i instantly saw how it lowered realy much and clos...(you know the rest) happy for help!

Re: Soft palate

Big tenor breaths???? That's your first mistake! You DO NOT need a big breath for high notes. Tip #2- follow the Raise Your Voice system. and watch the videos on the Members section. practice the owl exercise so you learn where to place your voice.

Re: Soft palate

The owl exercise is in ryv2 or in a certain
video lesson?

thanks.

Re: Soft palate

Well the thing is that i dont think it's the placement, i hum to get the resonance buzzing on my teeth but as i take it higher...
i watched this in a mirror i saw the whole thing come down and close of almost all my throath only leaveing a small pinhole. i tried several things just to trick the voice to keep the soft palate raised on the high note. but as i came to a certain point(note) it came down.
thanks for tip though il try the owl infront of a mirror and see if it makes a diffrence

Re: Soft palate

The owl exercise is mentioned and explained in one of the videos. I do not remember which one. Jens, it is most defnitely placement. The teeth buzzing is a partial sign of correct placement. Sounds like a lot of stress and constriction. I would work on Bullfrogs, tongue pushups and removing tension from the tongue from the useful tips in the section on VSR from RYV. Plus work with the mirror. This is a very common problem with singers that is caused from years of misdirecion, where the mind/body thinks you are trying to swallow as you ascend. Also try yawning and making the biggest highest yawning sound ever, then slide down your range. Don't make it musical; really yawn and let out a BIG sigh. Really over exaggerate the yawn. You'll get it.

Re: Soft palate

Yeah the same thing happens to me...I think someone mentioned this in the post called Tonsils (Uvula). To tell you the truth, I can't produce a high note without out my throat narrowing and my uvula disapearing...I just can't do it...I feel relaxed...it doesn't feel like there is a great strain...but it still happens. It kinda scares me because it means too much tension, but as of yet i can't seem work my way around it.

Re: Soft palate

BIG thanks for all the tips! you need to be pushed in the right direction some times!
now il work infront of the mirror and see what it does for me.
It's mostly in the high falsetto/mix parts over tenor C that makes it lower like crazy, even when i go whistle probably why my whistle is so unstable from day to day
