THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

The Reality

After all this time I've realised, you have to practice for at least 3 hours per day, preferably 6.

And when I say this I mean you have to rehearse with a relaxed, de stressed voice in order to ingrain muscle memory.

I'm through looking for the magic pill and rushing my singing. I spend half an hour just warming up before even vocalising.

Everything has to be journalled and recorded, exercises have to be done as slowly as possible at first and then increased gradually over time.

This is the only way.

The only way to Mastery.

Enjoy the Journey...

Re: The Reality

If you really want to get to a place you really want. You practice more than normal.

I practice three hours a day myself. But still not satisfied and can still see where I could be. But I will get there. Got to be dedicated.

Re: The Reality

I practiced 5 or 6 hours a day in the past. Now here is the catch. You CANNOT say that is the way because every physical singer is different. If you have the drive and 3 or 4 hours is helping you tremendously, then you are on the right path. Some people might need more, some less. It depens on the singe.

Re: The Reality

You're right.

Re: The Reality

With work commitments, etc, I find the best way to practice is to do what you can when you can!

I have a tape of warm up exercises that I sing along with on the way to work, and then I go to a rehearsal studio three nights a week (whenever possible) to do the RYV exercises - this is because I can't do them at full volume in my appartment without incurring the wrath of my neighbors!

On the way to the rehearsal studio, I do my warm up tape again so that I'm ready to go straight into the three main RYV exercises when I get there. I warm down on the drive home. So, all together I do about an hour's workout this way. On the days when I can't get to the studio, I do my warm up routine at least once a day, followed by whatever I can fit in from the RYV exercises on the way to and from work. On top of that I have band rehearsal one night a week too, and I do the tape in the car on weekends when I can too.

Ideally I'd like to be doing at least an hour long session in one place every day, but circumstances prevent that at the moment, so I just do the best I can. I've found that the RYV exercises have worked very well for me this way.

Another point that maybe others on here could try - the studio where I do vocal practice lets me have half-hour or hour slots - this was my idea, not theirs !!!! I go after work so I'm in there between afternoon bands finishing up and before the evening sessions start, so it's a few extra bucks for them at a time when the room I use would be empty otherwise.

I've done this in three different cities where I've lived all over the UK, and they've all been happy to do it. Sometimes when I have a day off work I've gone in for an hour in the morning before they're officially open - might be worth asking your local rehearsal studio if they'll do the same for you!

Re: The Reality

i think is important the way you work with exercises
and see what is evolving. even if you just practice
one hour per day and is evolving, then great!
If you practice 5 hours and see no improvment.. well..
