THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

I practice 3 hours a day on excercises on my days off of work. And there are certain times of the day I cannot practice. In the mornings, my voice is just like me. It's not a morning person. lol

So anyttime after ten I begin practicing. I do not practice three hours straight on excercises. I do one hour. Then wait and practice on some songs.

Wait...then practice an hour. Then later in the evening depending on band practice or playing out. I do warmups. I will practice again or I do it before bedtime.

So in all I possibly practice 4 hours on my days off. Three on excercises, not sure on just warmups. I practice at least a 45 minutes on just songs at seperate times. Not counting band practice two times a week.

I do not lose my voice and it doesn't hurt.

Now on the days I work(I work 12 hour shifts) I still practice. I just go to my car or go home. I don't live far from my job. And I work on a deck above the floor and I have some privacy. I work alone. So, I'm eiether singing or practicing excercises. Yes...people know I do this.

I just increased it the last couple of months. Not sure if this is bad. But I'm not doing it straight three hours all at once. So it's not causing problems. My voice is fine.

Jim Gilette once said he practiced 4 to 6 hours a day.

What about you Jaime? Anyone?

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

I used to practice as much as Jim but I was a freak too;) 3 hours is a lot. If your voice feels fine and you are improving then keep at it. It is all dependent upon the individual and how bad they want it.

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

I want it bad. That's why I increased my time.

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

I practice about an hour a day on memorizing songs that my teacher gives me.And I practice about 30 minutes on strengthening my diapragm(good LORD it hurts)

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

I only practice about a half and hour to an hour a day, then a couple hours when i'm with the band... i think it's just dependent on the individual.

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

I played in a band in 91-93 called Chained Angel and e rehearsed 4-6 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, and that is not including my warmups and workouts. I was the only singer in the band.

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

In university I used to practice 4 to 6 hours a day too. Now that I have a "real job", I can barely find time between getting ready for the next day of teaching, writing/practicing my own music and resting. I don't really practice voice per say that much except during the summer I only wish I could...

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

I am so busy with the revising of RYV, two other books, 4 other audio products, 3 digital products, a vocal system on CD, and various new shows, that I have absolutely no time for singing. AGGHHHHH, the one thing I love is put on hold to help the masses;)

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

Why not write and sing at the same time? It could be a new cahpter for your book.

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

whoops...I meant chapter.

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

Just remember to type on the vowels ;).

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

I try to do an hr or hour and a half. depends on how long I can disappear b4 my wife comes looking for me lol.

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

I do 30-45 minutes on Mon, Wed & Fri which is scheduled, so I must do it.

Anything else is a bonus.

I usually do non vocal exercises on Tues, Thu, Sat & Sun. Which involves 500 consecutive bullfrogs with increasing resistance, rib expansion breathing exercises, tongue push ups and so on.

Keep a hardbound spiral journal and record what you do on a daily basis, a page per day. If you don't fill the page, put ideas on how to improve, affirmations and so on.

This is an excellent thread, I would like to see in depth regimen's of guys like Steve Augeri and Jeff Scott Soto and some of the newer high calibre guys. It would be interesting to see what Jim Gillete, Brett Manning and David Phelps schedules were when they were/are at their peak.

A lot of systems never reveal how much time and work it takes to get to this kind of level.

Re: How many hours a day, do you practice, or should practice?

I have never thought of keeping a journal on this. cool advice.
