THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

question for jaime

I posted a similar question to this when you were gone to Paris. I figured I'd re-post it. I'll start off by saying that I have been practising the RYV techniques for over a year and I plan on continuing with them for a long time to come.

1)I'd like to develop my voice to the point where I can over drive grit on to any note in my range. I've been using the power push to get a gritty sound. When I get to about a G4, the grit gets progressively weaker up until my break at around C5...weaker meaning I can only apply a bit of grit before the note breaks apart and flips into falsetto. Ideally I would like to get aggressive grit going on every high note, something along the lines of Chester Bennington, David Draiman or M Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold. What, in terms of what muscles are not developped enough, is preventing me from achieving this? Is there any exercises you suggest to your students besides RYV techniques to target this goal?

2)After passing my break point, I feel like the power push just makes my note louder, instead of getting a gritty sound. In order to produce a gritty sound, I feel like I have to untighten my chords (like a reinforced falsetto)and what I get is a brian johnson effect. Is this an incorrect approach? I find that this sounds weak...some days more than others.

Thanks

Re: question for jaime

1. Yes there are more exercises and I will be releasing a program soley for that reason sometime this year.
2. You shouldn't be using a full power push on low notes, unless you are referring to the throaty stuff. he cords should NEVER feel tight regardless of a brian Johnson or a hester Bennington sound. The way you describe is one way of achieving it. I'd love to go into detail but I am under contract right now. The only way I can divulge this information is through private instruction, but anyone on this board is welcome to give their thoughts on this matter.
