THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Soft voice - Loud Voice

Through my training, I have discovered that with a low volume voice, I can do some pretty amazing (to me) stuff with my voice. I can dial in rasp, I have very wide vibrato, and can sing like a mofo.

My problem is, it doesn't sound POWERFUL enough to me. When I sing live, I push it more to get the "ROCK GOD SOUND." Does it just take time to get the "Little voice" to come out louder and more powerful? I'm afraid to use the quiet voice live because it's just not BIG enough yet.

Am I on the right track here?

Re: Soft voice - Loud Voice

Jim Gillette had me doing his exercises at the tiniest volume and purest tone possible back in 1992. That approach allows you to gain vocal cord control. After you master tyhat, you can start adding more weight. As far as live performing, get a good soundman, keep it light for a while and crank the volume. It doesn't matter if you sing soft or loud, it should ultimately be your choice.

Jaime isnt that kind of what the speech level singing stuff does as well??????

Re: Soft voice - Loud Voice

To a point yes. The ultimate goal of any singer should be to sing at any volume with any tonality on any note in their range, without straining. SLS maintains a soft approach but the act of singing at as soft and pure a tone as possible, ( as taught to me by Jim) is something different. The approach I mention is purely for developing muscle memory and vocal cord coordination and you most likely wouldn't go on stage and sing that way because the resonance is minimized.

Would doing your ryv and then taking some sls lessons because the instructor is in front of you be helpful or counter productive? I will not give up your exercises because I have seen huge improvements already :)
