THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Maynard James Keenan's circular breathing

I don't know how he does it. I would guess Brandon here, might know. Circular breathing is where you are taking in air even as you are expelling it. This allows you to sing for as long as you can hold a note, because you never run out of air. I really want to learn to do it, but I haven't run into anyone who teaches that.

Re: Maynard James Keenan's circular breathing

Circular breathing is not for singers and anyone who says it is will have to prove it to me. Circular breathing is a method for horn players to continually hold notes. What they do is learn how to redirect some of the airflow into cheek and allow it to expand, then when they run out of air, they squeeze that bit of air to keep the note going as they inhale. I watched my band director do this with his trumpet just to prove that you can hold the note when one of my friends complained about one of his notes being held out tool long and he couldn't do it. It made him look like a whining idiot, which he was a class clown so he deserved it ;)

Re: Maynard James Keenan's circular breathing

Yep. Circular breathing has NOTHING to do with voice.

I learned to do it when I bought a little diggerie-doo kit and book from Interstate Music.
You are breathing in through your nose while breathing out through your mouth. It's kind of freaky, actually.

I watched Kenny G hold a single note for 45 minutes - but he had to stop because he had a mouth full of spit from doing it for so long. LOL
I thought it might be helpful in singing - but it's not - at all.
