THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

UBW First day exercises

Ok I got through the tension release and what not and made it through to sustain #3 here are my questions.

1) Regarding sustain #3 - Am I still supposed to start at C4???? I made it all the way to C5 but could only do C5 for 25 seconds.
2) I think I am starting to go into head voice at about G4 - is this fairly normal?
3)Should start this drill lower, or is it better to stay higher and work on sustaining the higher notes even though they are head for now??????

This site is awesome - You guys are helping me understand vocal mechanics in a major way and I greatly appreciate your feedback and help!!!!!

Re: UBW First day exercises

Actually, you can start the exercise at any pitch you wish. You would probably be more comfortble starting at an F or G below middle C. Singers are different and will enter head voice at different pitches so you're cool. Thanks for the props on the site. Now, just spread the word to about one hundred million other people and make this site #1, haha;)

Jaime - I will make you rich - lol!!!!!!!

So I picked songs that were vocally right at my break point (around F4 or so) on the more aggressive chorus and I am struggling to hit it while singing and it sounds like crap as far as tone goes. Is that normal to start even if I can sustain it in the sustain exercise????????

Re: UBW First day exercises

Yes because songs involve all sorts of vowels and consonants and are much harder than controlled exercises.

HEY JAIME

I cant stand up because my achilles tendon was shredded and is healing...... Is it harder to sing and hit high notes when not standing?????????

Re: UBW First day exercises

Re: UBW First day exercises

Well hell you are a stud - I am talking about normal people hahahaha.

Re: UBW First day exercises

I can't sing them properly sitting down either, Chris. I think you need to be sitting with a very straight back of standing up to get the high notes right.

Re: UBW First day exercises

I think it may be harder to keep good posture sitting down, especially with an acoustic guitar strapped around your neck!!!!!!!

Re: UBW First day exercises

Sitting down and practicing is good work. Keep your back straight, support the tone, focus the sound for correct placement, enhance the resonancer, and let er' rip ;)

Hey Jaime,

I finished the 6 weeks in ryv woohoo, I went back and started the ubw again today So here is my question: On the last exercise, i think it is called sustain 3 - Does it matter if I go into falsetto or am I supposed to stay in full voice???
