THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Jaime please listen to this audio example!!!!

http://media.putfile.com/crunchy-voice-of-Mike

It's small cuts from Michael Jackson's songs where he do his crunchy stuff.
1. What's the name of thing he did- grit, growl?
2. It doesn't sound like usual grits and growls that I have heard in rock music(thought I'm not big listener of rock except Prince ) The sound is just like he is making this squeeze type of crunch not fry-type. It's very tight it just doesn't sound like fry orginated. If it's vocal fry originated what's his secret...?
3.Sometimes if you listen carefully it sounds like he's doing some strange manipulations with mouth to make this sound(I like it maybe it's to sweet for metal and rock lover like you... but I like it)
4.He's using this voice all the time still he has not harm his almost infant like soft singing...

What do you think?

Re: abe

I love prince and Michael Jackson. I grew up listening to both singers and loved Off The Wall, the album before Thriller. All throaty sound originate from a vocal fry type approach. He's more mid-range grit, like Nickelback. It will all be explained in due time:)

Re: abe

Dang it - Once again a day late and dollar short!!!!

Re: abe

how did mr. seth riggs allowed him to do such a grits if sls is popularizing so ''steril'' sing approch

Re: abe

Because in the end, Mr. Riggs does not control the singer. That was Micahel's choice. If you go back and listen to a CD like Off The Wall, you can tell he's using the easy mix/falsetto approach. But on Thriller, he took it upon his self to step up his game.

Re: abe

OK I don't want to bother you... this is your ''singing temple'' but I know that Mr. Riggs was acctually traveling togather with Michael on Bad tour... it wasn't metal... anyway much harder than ''Trhiller'' a lot og gritty stuff, scream etc. And Q. Jones said that it was Riggs accoplishent to keep Michael tuned ''as good as Ferrari''.
It's really hard for me to understand that every one is talking around that SLS is week girl stuff still Tina Turner, Jackson, Wonder, Minelli are quiet strong singers (I don't compare them with ''Nitro'' ofcourse) while Madonna stopped studying SlS befor geting all basic and as singer she is quiet week

Re: abe

You aren't bothering me. That's what we are here for :) It's not weak girl stuff, but I know of many metal singers who tried it and it couldn't get them that full voice power. Another thing you've got to realize is that when you have a PA backing you, you can work the mic to add a grittier sound and more power.

Seth doesn't create the singer's voice and any vocal coach that tells you he does is full of bull. A singer has certain vocal characteristics already built in and a particular style that drives them. Michael and Tina were already power house singers. Seth didn't make them. He most likely saved their voices though by showing them how to soften the sound and work around the break. There is nothing wrong with that approach, but what I have chosen to teach here is how to use your voice in any fashion you choose from falsetto to mix to full. There is no concrete way to learn how to sing. You need to try different things and figure out what works for you:)
