THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Help me please

Hey,
I have a little problem. I usually sing along with dream theater. Im doing it for a long time now. My problem is, that i only get the very high notes with my full voice if I pull my head a bit to the right. I saw this as I watched me in my mirrow while singing. Then I tried singing while leaning against the door.. so I had to stand perfectly straight ( my head was straight too). And then I sing a long with dream theater and the high notes sounded awful. Does anybody know, why I have this problem and how I can delete it. Thank you for your Help.
Robin

Re: Help me please

Sure do. You developed a bad habit a developed a certain muscle memory to hit those high notes. Now, every time you go for those notes, the body thinks the only way to reach them is by leaning your head and putting certain muscles into unnescessary stress. The solution- Start practice the three main exercises from Raise Your Voice and work your way back up to thise notes week by week until each come effortlessly. Download the 4 instructional videos from the Members section and you'll see demonstraions of me hitting notes effortlessly, that James LaBrie himself, personally asked me, if I could show him how to hit with ease. James and I are friends. Oh yeah, you are going to have to quit singing the high parts for a few weeks and break that habit and practice your ass off with the RYV exercises until you have correctly strengthened the voice and can nailo thise notes with ease.

Re: Help me please

Hey Jamie,
Thank you for your tips.
So I will do this. I thought, perhaps it would be a genetic mutation or something allowing only to reach high notes when I lean my head to thr right way. But now im calm. Thank you again. I will practise it and let you know about my success.

Re: Help me please

Robin, when you say high notes, how high are you talking? It could be possible that one of your vocal folds could be paralyzed or partially paraylzed. That could explain why you have to tilt your head slightly to the right in order to get the note. That would help the weaker cord make better contact with the cord that is normal. Once again, this is just a possibility. You should try what Jaime has suggested first. Ultimately, it's hard to really know what's going on without having someone work with you.
