THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Hoarseness Recovery Time --- Share your story here!

Rodney
We've all had it happen to us...share your story here so others can learn from it!

For me:

1st hoarseness (man was I terrified)--> 11 days to full recovery
2nd time ---> 6 days to full recovery
3rd time ---> 8 days to full recovery (didn't rest it like I should have)

My recovery routine is usually ~2 days no talking, ~2 days moderate talking, ~2 days light/medium singing. Til now it's always taken me at least 6 days to recover fully.

Dude, going horse is not normal if you are singing with good technique. You might need to take a lesson from Jamie or something. You might be really damaging your voice...like permanently.

Oh, I should made it clear, getting hoarse like this is BADDDD.

All 3 of my past experiences were from overstraining in the past. I was sharing my past mistakes & recovery times

Oh gosh, I haven't lost my voice since learning to sing properly. I don't know, maybe because I don't ever scream or do "rock" techniques like that. Before learning to sing I used to try to hit high notes by getting louder and screaming and shouting. I was basically a baritone trying to sing in the tenor range with no training. Bad idea! It took about 4 or 5 days to fully recover.

Re: Hoarseness Recovery Time --- Share your story here!

Every time I've ever hurt my voice has been because I was at a loud rock concert or bar, screaming. Recovery time has always been 1 or 2 days, probably because I didn't hurt myself too bad. Take care of your voice, you only get one...

I have blown my voice out twice to the point where I could not speak for weeks. I mean, I could not even get a sound out. AT ALL.
The first time, Mark Baxter got my voice back.
The second time, Jaime helped me get me my voice back.

The first time it happened, I evidently had laryngitis and didn't know it. I was singing Cult and Danzig songs pushing as much air as possible. The next day, I woke up, and nothing. I couldn't speak for a couple of weeks.

The second time, I was singing "After Dark" by B.O.C. over and over at home. It was the falsetto background parts of the chorus.
That time I couldn't speak for 2 months.
It took me 2 more months of a raspy voice to be able to get above a C4. I told Jaime about my plan to overdose on vitamin C. I took 200,000mgs of Vitamin C - it gives you diarrhea, and eventually you are just passing clear water; definitely a strange situation, but it becomes a super-antihistamine and washes all of the toxins out of your system.
Man, I felt like I could float, but within about 2 hours of hitting 180,000mgs, I had my voice back. I called Jaime as soon as I got my voice back. I was also taking tablespoons of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar. (Man, that stuff is great for killing bacteria, but it will take your breath away when you just take it in a spoon! LOL)
That was around 2005, I think. But it was at that point that I really got serious about my voice training.
