THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Chronic voice pain/soreness - Jamie, can you share your story regaring you voice rehabilitation?

Hey again, both of you!

Sorry for such a long vacancy, but I´ve been very occupied with exams and such...

the thing is, I have checked quite a lot of things, and I don´t think the issue lies in any of your suggestions. However, I´ll try your tips out, and see if I feel any improvement! Haven´t used humidifier before. I have no allergies and drink plenty, excersise, sleep well.
But I do experience quite some stress (mental, which sometimes manifests itself physically), and I will be working with this along a physiotherapist as well as checking out some relaxation/yoga-techniques. I´ll also create a log to pin-point exactly when my voice is better and worse. However, I DO have some details already that I may mention.

I very often wake up with a sore feeling in my throat, almost more like a cold. However, this particular feeling goes away quite fast after I get up for the day.

The voice pains are usually not that big when I speak/sing at lower volumes, however when I add some more volume, especially at slightly higher pitches, my voice tires and becomes painful very fast (both speaking and singing).

I may have developed a habit of speaking slightly above my optimal range some years ago...this was kind of a strategy to promote "increasing vocal range", thinking that by elevating my speaking pitch, it would become easier to sing higher. This didn´t really work, and quite sadly, when the pains started going constant I noticed I´d also lost some of my lower range...So the low notes would be my "weak spot" in my range. I´ve worked with a speech therapist to lower the speaking pitch again, though I haven´t noticed improvement yet.

Interestingly: My voice is VERY much better when I excersise, especially cardio-based training, for instance when I play some ball game, I can "shout" a bit without it hurting too much. Perhaps something with blood stream..?

The musculature in my neck is also very tense, especially at the front.

Hopefully some of these observations may help..? I´ll write some more when I recall more symptoms
