THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Minimizing lip roll stupidity?

Bo Dylan Guage
Does anyone have any tips or advice for minimizing the stupid look of lip rolls?

I've been trying to improve my singing lately, and have realized how beneficial lip rolls are, so I've been doing them a lot.

However, my girlfriend dumped me because of lip rolls. I would be doing them throughout the day, without restraint. Sometimes spit would be flying everywhere, but I didn't care.

She said she didn't like it when I did that. At first she said it's because I wasn't listening to her when she was talking (I would sometimes lip roll when she would tell me about her day, etc.), so I made efforts to not lip roll while she was talking, and I'd resume right after she stopped. Eventually the real reason came out.

GF: "Uhhh! Will you stop doing that?! You look so stupid!"

Me: "but I have to practice singing, baby."

GF: "I can't do this anymore! I'm done. It's over. Find some lip rolling freak to join you, because it ain't me."

She left and hasn't answered my calls for two weeks now.

Losing a gf is one thing, but I've also lost most of my friends over it too. I'd lip roll at the bars and when we hung out playing video games, but I stopped getting invited to hang out, and when I'd call them they'd flake out on me. I ran into three of my friends at the store two days ago and I noticed they tried to avoid me, but I said hi anyways and they seemed distant.

There's more that can be said, but overall the lip rolls have had a negative impact on my life in general. On the upside, my singing resonance and range has definitely improved.

Anyone have suggestions? It would be greatly appreciated!
bbbbbbbbbbwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwhaahhahahahaahhaha!

Re: Minimizing lip roll stupidity?

You are being a f...ing p.ssy with your girlfriend thats why she dumped you. Why the hell are you letting anyone in the room while you are practicing? The lip rolls are not having a negative impact on your life , YOU are having a negative impact on your life. If you are a singer stand tall and be a singer. Uuuh your buddies left ya? Do they care about you? Then why do you CARE? If my girlfriend told me that she didnt like i do lip rolls she is gonna get in serious trouble trust me. I do whatever i want and i dont care. I wanna be a singer. I am gonna be a singer. Nothing else matters more than that. THAT is the way you should be thinking. Why are you doing lip rolls in public? There is a certain time when you practice and a certain time when you dont. And that's it. Grow some balls.

Hey Val, I think it is possible that the entire post was meant to be humorous.

Re: Minimizing lip roll stupidity?

spit flying around everywhere........hahaha that made my day :))
Just in case that this post isn't meant to be funny, you should listen to Val's advice and organize your practicetime! exercising in public isn't usually a good idea......althoug I would laugh my butt off if somebody came across the street doing minor-mines and maaaaays :) haha I think I would immediately join him/her.........maaaay :)
If that somebody was a beatiful girl I would immediately date her........minor-mine ;)
But if that post was meant to be humorous you did awesome work :))

lalalala gnaaaa eeeeeee gnaaaa :)

Minimizing lip roll stupidity?

Try the tongue rolls :)
A drrrr sound made by your tongue against your upper pallet.
try imagine said "drove" and emphasize the r. Now do your warm ups with only the "dr"

Should be.. I always stuck to lip rolls but heard this a good enough alternative :)

Good luck!

Re: Minimizing lip roll stupidity?

I used to do my vocal exercises at work(when I had a job) but always in the back room. My manager thought it was kinda funny. :P

Re: Minimizing lip roll stupidity?

I wouldn't recommend doing your exercises in a public place unless you don't mind being judged. I'm not sure whether I should laugh or sympathize with this poster... anyway, common sense will take you a long way.

Re: Minimizing lip roll stupidity?

many of us lack common sense. I do lip bubbles all the time. It's how I learned to crack glass and talk to fish.

I hope you don't crack the glass of the fish tank while talking to them. Haha
