THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

I'm doing something wrong here

I was wondering if you all would mind listening to my attempt at a siren and tell me what I'm doing wrong. Am I flipping into falsetto or am I just pinching off the note? I know I'm doing something wrong but I just can't figure out what it is.

Re: I'm doing something wrong here

You flipped a bit back towards falsetto, though it happened without a huge break to point it out. Start about a half octave lower and work up a step at a time. When you feel that little smooth flip wanting to occur, slow down the speed at which you are sliding up. When it happens, step back down half a step and try it again. Then, go up half a step a retry. Do this several times at the top end of your range. It will work out the muscles and begin solidifying the coordination so you can maintain full voice;)

Re: I'm doing something wrong here

Wow. Thanks so much. I'll definitely work on doing that.

Re: I'm doing something wrong here

Btw. I never could understand why I should have started lower but I do now. When I did it starting much lower I could really feel everything rise up like the the lotto balls analogy. I guess I was starting higher because I was running out of breath but I actually have more breath when I start lower and take my time. I can only assume that is because I'm not forcing anything which means I'm not using more energy than required.

Re: I'm doing something wrong here

My friend , you are using too much breath and i can hear by the tone of your voice that you are not supporting well. Start big , end big. Keep the same tone as you go higher and push down more. :)

Re: I'm doing something wrong here

It doesn't take massive amounts of breath, so for you to say you have more breath starting lower points that you need work. Most singers want to start high and forget the low part. Start on your lowest note and work from there up;) You'll be surprised how much working the low voice benefits the high voice.

Re: I'm doing something wrong here

Thanks to the both of you for taking the time to listen to my sample and the great advice. I've gained several notes but now I have to use that advice to get them smooth and sounding good.
