THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Karaoke

Last night was my first time going sing Karaoke. I was a little nervous. The wife convinced me to go. I gotta say, it was the most fun that we had in a LONG time. Actually knowing how to sing really helps. LOL! People were complimenting Amber and me all night. Amber did a note for note (and attitude for attitude) version of Alanis Morisett's You Outta Know. The whole place was cheering after! They even asked us to join in with them a few times. I like to cheer for the people that sounded bad too though because it does take guts to get up there and sing. I think we are actually going to get into some karaoke contest and try to win. I encourage you all to get out there and start singing in front of people. It has done wonders for my confidence.

Re: Karaoke

That's really awesome
I remember I used to always sing at church when I sucked really bad, but people loved it and always wanted me to sing. I just saw someone recently at the grocery store who hasn't been to my church in awhile and they told me they missed hearing me sing.

I'm working on getting some songs learned well enough so I can get back to it

Re: Karaoke

That sounds like a blast Ben. It's very cool that you were so supportive to the terrible ones. Singing is mostly mental and the support you give might encourage someone to get better. I've been in several bands where the singer was terrible going in but got pretty good as we went along.

I've had very little experience with Karaoke but there was a guy at the beach who set up a recording studio where people could go in and sing a song or two and basically record a tape (Yes before cd's). The cool thing is that they piped a video stream right out on the main sidewalk for everyone to see. One guy did very good on "Dust in the wind" by Kansas. That's a very hard song I think, and from my understanding, still quite popular in Karaoke.

It really was so much fun! Some of those guys didn't sing too bad, they had good, but untrained voices. I told one guy to lower the key of the song he was singing, he did, and totally rocked some Frank Sinatra. I was the terrible singer of a band that got better, so I know what you mean. LOL! I used to strain a lot and sing way higher than I really should have been doing. Dust in the Wind is only hard to sing if you are trying to sing it in the original key and aren't a tenor. LOL! I sing it like an octave down and it sounds great with my voice. My wife does the upper harmonies. Dust in the Wind is a great song to learn to get your fingerpicking together on guitar. It is awesome to have a mate that shares your passion for music.

I think we are going to try going back once a month and singing karaoke. People may think it is cheesy, but it is a lot of fun, and if you can actually sing, people will be impressed. Good training.

Re: Karaoke

I love karaoke! Need to do it once a week or I start to crave it really bad!

Hey Melanie, I used to sing at church a lot too, but at our new church, they have a LOT more singers than my old one. They don't need the extra help. I actually used to lead worship service with my bass and voice from time to time. You probably didn't such nearly as badly as you think you do. From what I can tell, people generally sing a lot better than they think they do........unless they are drunk karaoke singers. LOL! Then it is the opposite. Good luck getting those songs up to par and performing them. Are you singing old southern gospel type stuff? It is very cool that people missed hearing you!
