Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Sounded like a low b to a high b to me. You really should have a pitch wheel. Nothing has ever helped me more.

Hey Thanks, Guitrnflames. I have one and use it a LOT for my exercises, it is just difficult for me to discern which pitch I was hitting at the top. I have a hard time telling what a particular pitch is. I can sing it, but I can't name it! LOL!Which note is low B? What number I mean. B1?

It's the note before my pitch wheel app starts. So I guess it would be b1 ending on b2. I'm still learning vocal terminology but you where one note shy of finishing the c-c and moving on to the f-f so great job.

Sorry Ben. I didn't mean that the way it sounded. It's just that I never thought I'd need a pitch wheel since I was an ear trained guitar player and have been playing for at least thirty years. I just assumed that some other people play and sing by ear as well.

I didn't figure I needed a pitch wheel with all that "by ear" experience but wow was I ever wrong. When I started to sing along with the music my band had written it sounded terrible because the ear training I had gained from the guitar didn't translate over to the voice. So I put a quality pitch wheel on my ipod the very next day.

Oh hey man! No worries. I was not at all upset in any way. LOL! Middle C on a piano is considered C4. The tenor high C is C5. My natural range is G2-G4 without training (typical baritone type range) Which is the second G below middle C to the first one above it. The pitch wheel is great for Jamie's Isolation Method. B1-B2 is one octave. I hope it wasn't B1 to B2. LOL! I just started working on trying to sing higher. Doug, Val, Oiselle, Phil, YOU, Anthon, and others have inspired me to start trying to sing higher. I wasn't too worried about before, but dang! Those guys and gal sound amazing! Thanks for the inspiration, folks!

I am sure that its not B1-B2 coz it would be too low. I know gtrnflames will not be offended coz he admitted being new to these terms. It sounded like youve reached the 5th octave there but I will check later when I get home, with my handy guitar. :)

Yeah, Check and help me Derick. Use your new found short hair powers. LOL! I started using Jim Gillettes Vocal Power again last week. By the way, what kind of guitar is that you have? I think it sounds great. I primarily play acoustic guitar these days.....and I still pick up the electric bass when there are too many guitar pickers around! I think I'm a better bass player than a guitar player, but it is hard to write songs and accompany yourself on bass. :)

I have a Maton EM225c. The mic that I use, Behringer B1, also keeps the natural sound of the guitar, awesome for its price.

Yeah,its hard to sing and play bass. I wonder how can Sting do it!

I've never heard of Maton. Are they sold in the US?

Yeah, Sting is great and all, but his bass parts are pretty easy. I think Chris Squire from Yes and Geddy Lee from Rush are much more impressive in that regard. Tell me about my notes!

Absolutely no offense taken. I'm here to learn.

I loaded the file up into my software and it confirmed the b which I knew from my ear. But it also tells you what note exactly. It said b4. I would also like that substantiated so that I'll know if I was right.

Maton is an Aussie brand. I believe they are sold in US but it might be rare? I saw some youtube videos of Myles and Slash using Maton.

Starting note is clearly a Bb2. The highest note I think is between Bb4 and B4, tricky for me because its a slide and not sustained that long.

Hey Ben, do you have a tuner that reads the notes on the screen? That's how I know what notes I'm singing. I mean it doesn't show the octave I'm in, but that's usually easy with my guitar or pitch wheel's help. I use a korg chromatic tuner for finding my notes.

I do have chromatic tuner, but never used it for singing. I would think that it wouldn't really accurately measure notes of the human voice due to the overtones and harmonics and slight pitch variations due to subtle vibrato and such. I can tell what octave I'm in because of where I feel the resonance. I think I'll have to give the guitar tuner thing a try. Thanks for the tip Melanie! :)

I always use my chromatic tuner with my voice. That's how I do my pitch matching. works great for me!

Stupid exercise? :P No exercise is stupid. :D
Now crazy, yes. But stupid no. ;)
