THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Sirens

Okay so here is the thing. Whenever i do a siren sometimes i notice that i support really good (rock solid down there) but still as i go higher i feel this squeeze in my throat and my face gets red like a tomato. I can see some veins too. Any advice? I think even Jaime does it in one of the Audiofiles when doing the siren. He says , i was probably a little bit pinched. What is pinched? I dont understand that word

Re: Sirens

To me, the pinch comes from throat constriction and a lack of vowel modification as you go up. The tongue will rise up and the cavern at the back of the throat will reduce in size to a point that inhibits your ability to hit the note freely. You really need to rely on the resonance to take you up and not lose this at any point in the ascension. Too much air will oppose this, not enough warm up will oppose this, incorrect breathing will give you weak support for hitting it also.

Give yourself a really good warm up and make sure your resonance is there. Do some ng scales (like in sing). You cannot do these smoothly without correct placement and resonance.

Re: Sirens

So what you are saying is that my placement is not adjusted the right way ? I am in my soft palate but i am also in my throat too. Is that what you are trying to say? Thank you Doug. I will work on that.

Re: Sirens

Your placement may be right, just work on a bit more resonance and making sure you're fulling warmed up before trying such a high intensity exercise. Make sure you're taking your singer's breath before doing each line and keep that downwards support strong. If the notes are hard to approach, you might need to do a couple more lip bubble scales or not work up so high. Can you do these sirens smoothly without doing them loud and having no break? That is a better test.

Tnx million times !
