THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Belting

Val
Hey Ben its me again lol. Well if you ask me this should not be that hard with a proper techinque. Just support down there for more power and shoot it in the palate. Keep those teeth buzzing. You know from practicing myself for 3 hours everyday i realized that vocalizing is just not enough. Its the breathing exercises that do all the job. The vocal focus is just meant to not hurt your throat when singing. I will take swimming lessons this year to increase my breath capacity. :)
Thanks for the info Val. I used to belt quite a bit, but I always did it incorrectly. I don't wanna blow out my voice. I think Frank Sinatra did the same thing (swimming) to increase his lung capacity.

Re: Belting

Ben , man i heard you , and i gotta tell ya. You have the perfect voice for country music. Technique is technique , that is true , but its the passion that matters the most. Singing with your heart and enjoying it. Something i never understood in the past. Keep recording!

Re: Belting

first you need to have been practicing so that you can stay in your chest voice quite high in your range, if you train like brett manning you will be never pushing your voice higher.

then, you'll need to be fully warmed up to be able to belt good. this is what i was saying in the other thread where i do a full on vocal workout, then rest 30 mins and sing. most people just "try to belt" when they haven't even warmed up. and warming up doesn't mean "do a few lip bubbles"

your middle voice needs to be "woken up" this only happens with a proper warmup (proper warm up to me is a full vocal workout then 30 min rest). most people when they try to belt, they are staying in chest voice (this is fine if the notes are in that area of your range) but when the notes are too high you need to go more into a "mix" this just means that the notes are more in that heady/falsetto area but you are able to bring up the meaty chest tone and mix it in. there is no magic to this, all you need to do is be really really warmed up and be able to smoothly transition from chest to head, and most people never are.

once again remember where i said i do a full on vocal workout, and that becomes my warmup? rest 30 mins and sing, you'll be surprised at what you thought was hard is now easy.. you need to wake up the middle voice.
