THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Whole Lotta Love Cover

Hey guys,

Just finished recording this classic song that I'm sure nobody on any rock based vocal forum (such as this one) has ever thought to cover before...

Anyway, here it is http://www.box.net/shared/ln4fg4i5kx

I know it's average at best. I'd love a few sentences on what I should do to improve (if someone can spare it) and not just a basic observation. But all comments are appreciated.

Peace.

Dang Nathan! Your voice has really improved a LOT since you first started posting songs. I really like it! Keep working on this tune man. You'll nail it. Does this kind of singing hurt your throat?

Re: Whole Lotta Love Cover

wow nathan awesome cover!!!!
Those high notes sound like you really got your mixed voice under controll which is great. I really ain´t got anything to critisize on your voice because it all seems to fit together but it felt like you were going a bit nasal sometimes. But like I said it is an AWERSOME cover you are really improving from post to post :) the sound mix also sounded great which recording program and microphon did you use ???

Re: Whole Lotta Love Cover

Thanks guys :)

This doesn't hurt my throat, nope. It just requires a lot of energy is all.
The program was ableton live and the mic was a T-Bone... I don't know an awful lot about the equipment and stuff as I let my friend take care of that bit (he has substantially more skill in these areas than I do).

Second verse was off though tbh. I dunno what happened.

Re: Whole Lotta Love Cover

How to do that?

Re: Whole Lotta Love Cover

Alex, what exactly do you mean? How do I do what?

Guys, my friend Mike recently remixed this and it sounds a hell of a lot better with his advanced production skills. You can check out the new version here: https://files.me.com/muskysnax/aibbti.mp3

Do let me know what you think.

Re: Whole Lotta Love Cover

I mean how the heck do you sing like that

Re: Whole Lotta Love Cover

Lol! Well, honestly, practice. I've been doing this for four years (only discovered head voice one year ago though). It's slowly starting to get where I want it to go, but I'm still far from that.

RYV has some amazing exercises for establishing headvoice, that works for most people. I had a lot of issues with this though so had to seek out a private teacher.

The one who really helped me get into this configuration and ultimately improve my technique, was Robert Lunte. He is the founder of The Vocalist Studio and recently released the 2nd edition of his 'Pillars of Singing' vocal tuition series. I've not checked out the new DVD due to lack of money, but I hear it's hot. Personally, I booked a load of private lessons with him.

I'm not here to advertise any teacher or whatever, especially not on Jaime's forum as he himself is one of the best teachers available (goes without saying). Plus, I don't get paid anything by anyone, which is actually a shame ;)

The exercises in RYV should be enough for most people. Once I established my head voice, these exercises became invaluable, I still use them, they kick ass. They helped me firmly ground this stuff, which I needed.

Re: Whole Lotta Love Cover

Well I think the biggest obstacle is finding that headvoice, then you can work with it, but without it's discovery, I seem to get stuck in one place forever.

Do you have have any tips how to find it or something, I would really appreciate that.

Re: Whole Lotta Love Cover

For me, correct use of twang helped. 'Twanging' whilst doing sirens which take you up a perfect 5th. Start low and work high. It's get tougher as you get closer to the arpeggio (the 'break' area). Don't push. Add more twang if anything. It should be light and twangy.

I really cannot describe it very well in a post like this. Requires face to face lessons and stuff really. Can teach it that way though.

Re: Whole Lotta Love Cover

Will i be right to say that there is a little Adam Lambert influence in your voice? Adam is my favourite. Great cover man :)
