THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Watch Over You - Alter Bridge (cover)

Hey Everyone!!! :D

So I've been at Tech Music School, London, for five weeks now and have honestly not learnt loads (vocal technique wise) from the teachers. However, due to all of the practice and hanging around with people (all better than me) and playing constantly, I feel I've improved. Also I've read through RYV again and realised I wasn't necessarily focusing in the palate as much as I could have been. Working on that. Going to get some Oiselle lessons ASAP.

Now I had to send this to a friend so he could show his band and then they'll let me in (hopefully).

I can't afford expensive musical recording software and fancy editing and stuff (you try being a music student in London) so I just used my dictaphone. So the recording quality sort of sucks. Plus this was all one take, no editing and stuff (because I'm here for feedback, not to show off). Also some of the notes are flat... "But it was NEVER ENOUGH..." That capitalised bit, yeah it's flat. This course has me singing all day, I'm a little tired :)

Also that chorus top note is probably off too...

So click this and tell me what you think.
I appreciate your time, honesty and (maybe) flattery.
Peace,
Nathan.

Hey Nathan!

I like your tone but maybe you should not use rasp as long as you have problems with flat notes.
You have a very nice vibrato and I can here a good sense for pitch, I bet you play an instrument ;)
The song really sounded good with your voice but the high notes where really flat and kind of forced.
But overall it was pretty good!
Keep exercising man and in a few years you are gonna kick the asses of the other singers in the music school :))

Greets from a fan of London!
René

Re: Watch Over You - Alter Bridge (cover)

I LOVE AB :) You did a great rendition of WOY. I'd love to work with you, so please do contact me ;) Your tone is a bit throaty but very pleasant overall and with a little work we can find the right balance for you to sing in your mix register. The higher range is a bit pitchy it's true but with better control over your support and placement, it will be easier for you to fix this. Keep it up!
