THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Free Fallin by Tom Petty

Hey all of you vocal maestros! I have a question for y'all. What is note is the highest one that Tom Petty hits in Freefallin in the beginning of the chorus? You know, "Now I'm FREE". I'd really appreciate if someone could tell me.

Re: Free Fallin by Tom Petty

Anyone? The reason I want to know is because I was never able to hit that note before. I've been doing the RYV exercises for four weeks now (doing the 7 week starter program). I decided to pop in my Tom Petty cd this morning and hit it effortlessly. It was easy! I was so freakin pumped that I put in a bunch of other cds that had notes that were a little too high for me and hit them too! :)

Re: Free Fallin by Tom Petty

Hi Ben,

If I am not mistaken, its an A4. I play guitar and I can find the note on the fifth fret of high E string.

Cheers,

Derick

Oh thanks man! I appreciate it. The highest note I was able to hit before was G4 in a strained falsetto. Coolio! :)Thanks again Derick.

Good on you mate!

I also just started training my voice when I bought RYV2 about a month ago. I have a low singing voice so I just falsetto it when the notes get higher. Within a month i was able to hit G#4 in full voice. I am aware that the progress is very fast at first and it will plateau later on, but still I was able to hit a higher note that I thought not possible for me.

My reference song by the way is David Cook's Always Be My Baby, particularly the end of the bridge ("Baby believe me......TIME"). If I remember it correctly, its G#4 with a slide to A4 in the middle. I just hit it with full voice unlike David's transcending (???) tone.

All the best to your training! Post some videos when you get a chance.

Hey buddy! Well, I'm not just starting to train my voice. I've been training it for about two years now. My low end is solid and I sing a lot there. I already know how to sing well. It's just a matter of strengthening my voice and extending my range now. I was just finding that I was limited in the amount of material I could sing along with on cds. I read RYV II two years ago and didn't understand a lot of it. Now that I've read and studied, it makes perfect sense. I decided to give RYV and Vocal Power another go. My voice is a light/lyric baritone type so I can naturally sing fairly easily from G2-G4, but I had it hit anything about middle C in falsetto before. It's nice to have options now. I actually hit an A4 for the first time in full voice last week. That was nice! Good luck with your training.

David Cook? You mean the guy that won American Idol a few years ago? I'm not familiar with that song, but I'll look it up. I like his voice. Keep up the good work. I was able to sing Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol today in the car really easily. This is kind of neat. I don't know if I feel comfortable to post videos yet.

Thank you for the encouragement.

I just listened to that song. He really did a great version of it! Good choice man.
