THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Is the SLS (Speech level singing)techniques useful for rock / Metal vocalists ?.

My Question is i have followed many different techniques to improve my voice now i am trying to learn sett riggs speech level singing techniques, Is the SLS techniques useful for rock / Metal vocalists ?.
I think any method that teaches good vocal technique will help you. I have and use Singing For the Stars by Seth Riggs. It didn't improve my range, but it did help improve my tone by helping me relax and just letting my natural voice come out. The think it helped me with most was bridging from chest to mixed/head voice without having to resort to falsetto (unless I wanted to of course). I think people get the wrong idea about what speech level singing is according to Seth Riggs. It's not singing like you talk. It's singing with the same comfort and ease as you do when you talk. It actually promotes less strain and an open throat. That is what I got from what he is saying. You probably should have good vocal technique before singing harder/harsher rock, so I guess it could help you depending on where you are in your vocal journey.

Re: Is the SLS (Speech level singing)techniques useful for rock / Metal vocalists ?.

I personally wouldn´t use it for Rock or Metal vocals.
Speech level singing is a great tool for pop singers but the thing with SLS is that your voice might sound really resonant in your upper register but also very thin. But if you want to sound resonant but thin and if you think it´s your style then use it.
There are reasons why you shouldn´t use SLS in Rock or Metal but you CAN use it if you want to sound that way. My suggestion is that you just give it a try and see for yourself if that is the kind of technique you want to use. Listen to some rocksingers who use SLS and see for yourself if that´s the kind of sound you want. All of us can give you advices but you have to find out yourself if you want to use it or not!

Greets and have fun with singing!

Have you learned the Seth Riggs version of SLS? It's not much different from the classical approach which is excellent for rock singing.
