THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Real Vocal Trouble

Hey all,

I get tonsillitis about 3 times a year roughly, and usually it doesn't do THAT much to my voice. It just hurts to sing - so I don't sing until it's gone.

This time, however, my tonsil seems to be permanently swollen slightly and I've lost about half an octave off the top of my range comfortably. By comfortably I mean if I try to sing a Tenor C in falsetto, I physically cannot do it without using the wrong muscles, it feels too strenuous.

I'm a bit worried to be honest. I thought it would go after a few days but it's now been over 2 weeks and I don't really know what to do. Should I start practicing again but knock off the notes I now can't hit?

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks

Re: Real Vocal Trouble

If you feel anything strange in your throat then don't practise and go see a doctor. Personally I have lost upper range a couple of times because of flu or whatever and I even tried to practise even though it was impossible. Bad idea. I'm sure your range will be back soon.

Re: Real Vocal Trouble

If you are having those kinds of tonsil problems, you have three options:

1. Keep doing what you are doing and have Tonsil problems three times a year.

2. Have your tonsils removed.

3. Make some dietary changes, until you find what helps you battle the tonsil infections.
Do you get Tonsilloliths (sometimes called Tonsil-stones)?

Re: Real Vocal Trouble

all "symptoms" are the body's avenue of release from a build up of plaque, fix your diet, 80% raw fruits and veg. if you take "modern medicines" approach to health which is either cut, burn or poison the symptom it won't address the cause of the problem and will just come back as something worse because you're still following the same lifestyle habits that got you the problem in the first place.
