THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Singing "right" light headvoice to get power?

HI guys,

Firstly truly grateful for this forum here.

I've been doing all kinds of exercises for a long time (couple of years) and I've come to realize that my biggest enemy is my mind. I am getting no where. I want so much to sing high and right that I turn it against me.

Couple weeks ago I changed to just singing what ever I wanted and tried not to listen to my voice at all. So if the voice was very weak my neighbours ended up calling cops for possible rape next door, I didnt give a ****.

I recorded some weak sample of my singing. My question is, IF I continue to sing like this, will my voice get stronger or am I just wasting my time. The problem is that If I try to sing that same part with power, I end up cracking my voice totally!!!

Please help, I want to enjoy singing and progress at the same time.

Re: Singing "right" light headvoice to get power?

Tuomas,

I deeply connect with you.
And I am very happy to read this,
especially because I was asking the same exact questions

AND - here comes the clou -
I got some answers from a person I personally trust!

First of all my opinion on your vocal sample
(I am no vocal instructor and am just saying what I very subjectively think):

Your coordination sounds pretty good.
Now, is it very strong? No, but can you build up from that?
Yes, and only from that I think.

You might have to blow a little bit more air,
especially when you attempt to sing 'full voice',
so try to find that balance between air and compression,
even at that small volume.

Now to THE ANSWERS ;-)

Your soft singing serves at least two purposes.

One, you will find the coordination, so really practice with focus
and pay attention to these small changes.

Two, it will release muscular tension.
Way important, because remember,
a muscle that is tight will not be all the way relaxed
as soon as you release the tension, so keep working on that.

The next step though is power.
You can build power from that light point,
but it will take you years to get anywhere.

So practice power separately.
This is also what I have read in RYV!

You will be doing all this release tension stuff to start with,
continue with coordination and once you got that,
you practice power - in this case, the siren exercise.

Keep working on all three areas
and you WiLL find success very quickly.

The light singing you wrote about has helped me a lot.
That will release tension and get the coordination down to your subconscious mind and also works on support already!

Power however is another part of your workout.

Hope that helps you
and if you have any questions at all, post them!

Have a great weekend, ƒelix.
