THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Dry throat from water

We have really good, like awesome, tap water in Northern Sweden so I use that the most, but even when I get bottle water at gigs I have the same problem. I feel really confused about it. Water is supposed to lubricate, and not make wasteland down my throat.

strange!

Re: Dry throat from water

Strange indeed.

Do you also have the problem elsewhere?
I mean it still could be the room,
maybe you gettin' a bit nervous,
too much water even?

I don't really know about Swedens water,
but what about minerals?

Re: Dry throat from water

It can be the air humidity that makes my throat dry, at least it sounds good but I don't know.

And yeah nervousness before or at the show might be the cause there.

You gave me something to reflect on! I think I have to experiment. If it's the air humidity, I can stand in a hot shower with lots of steam and drink, and see if I get the same dry feeling down my throat. I can then buy an air humidifier to increase the wetness at my practice location. And for the stage, I guess I can use some kind of spray for that. I'm gonna try this out.

The problem with the stage for me, is that I also play Lead Guitar and don't have any time to drink in the songs, just in between. And if it's nervousness, I guess I have to rely on anti-stress meditation before the show. So for me, I need my throat to get really lubricated before the next song, but the water only dries my throat. I might bring my own mixture water that I boil with honey, quite soothing, for the shows instead of plain water. But is honey good while performing? I have bad vibes about this.

Re: Dry throat from water

Try iodine supplementation. A handful of kelp tablets each day should do the trick. Or better yet, get (or make) some SSKI solution. I take one drop (sometimes two drops) of SSKI in a glass of water every morning. Iodine is known to increase the water content of respiratory secretions. In fact, SSKI solution in slightly higher doses (like 10 drops in water, 3 or 4 times per day) has been prescribed for use as an expectorant.

That's my educated guess at what might just help you out. If you try it, please follow-up here and let me know if this helped!

Re: Dry throat from water

water will do nothing for you if you aren't also having enough salt. and when i say salt, i mean REAL salt, not that cocain looking white powder that most people call salt.

if you aren't getting lots of salt you will be dehydrated no matter how much water your drinking. salt is a regulator of water. and i know this is counter to what you all believe, i know you all have been led to believe that salt is "bad". well thats processed salt. get raw sea salt. without salt you get bone problems. without salt, you get dehydrated. without salt, you die.

RESTRICTING SALT INTAKE IS DAMAGING TO LIFE (Real salt, not processed salt. eat NO processed salt as it contains aluminum which is toxic)

I WILL NOT ARGUE THIS WITH ANY OF YOU. I have been slammed before here when i challenged your views of cancer. none of you know how deep i am involved in the health scene and most of what you are told is healthy is in fact 180 degrees completely reverse of what is true. None of this is "medical" advice. it is my perspective on longevity. that doesn't take weight away from my opinion, because "medical advice" is simply opinion also.

I was hesistant to offer this reply but here it is, if you disagree, fine, and we can leave it at that.

Re: Dry throat from water

Good call Phil! You're absolutely correct on all counts! I agree with you completely!

Re: Dry throat from water

I agree with Phil.

Re: Dry throat from water

I will try sea salt! I don't think your method is wrong, sounds really interesting and I feel it's worth trying it out! I usually buy cheap salt, but I'm going to change that bad habit right now. I'm very excited about the result of this tip! Nothing I mentioned before really worked out for me, so this might be the one solution that eliminates my problem for good!

I've also ordered some Xooma. I think it will be a great complement for me and my dryness. Real healthy minerals combined with real salt might do the trick!

I'm really excited about the results!

Really amazing tips out there! I feel kind of overjoyed! Thanks!

Re: Dry throat from water

I honestly use Xooma every day and it works for me;) Even got James Labrie using it:)

Re: Dry throat from water

Okay! So here I am again with the results!

I've been going on with pure sea salt now since I got the tip. Sure tastes better but it hasn't really affected my results a lot. Same goes with Xooma, great product but I get even more dry in my throat after drinking that, but the rest of my body loves it. What seemed to work for me though is when I combine honey in some hot water. That's the only time I don't feel any dryness at all. Does that mean I'm a diabetic or something, because I sill get dry from drinking clear water. I find this really strange. I've even adjusted my diet to match with better health care and daily intake of minerals and vitamins.

I'm quite lost. Might go to a doctor to see wth the problem is :)

Re: Dry throat from water

Does this happen only when you sing? May be your technique is a bit off and is drying out your vocal cords faster then you can hydrate your throat.

It takes about 20 min for the body to assimilate your water intake and redistribute it in your body. Try gargling water for immediate results.

Re: Dry throat from water

It concerns drinking water in general. I always get dry from drinking water. I even tested to drink about 10 liters of water each day for a week, and I still got the same problem.

While singing it won't affect me as long as I don't drink water. The moment I swallow some water I feel dry directly for about an hour. It gets even worse if I'm nervous, but I can't be nervous all the time 24/7, if nervousness would be the cause (I live quite a slack life). So I though it was my body that didn't really absorb water well. I followed a great salt tip and I bought xooma for better hydration. I can feel a personal difference in health and body except for my throat.
