THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Lower throat tension...

Hey guys,
before asking a question I will give you a notice about my voice:
1) I'm absolutely sure my breathing is great. I've been working on breathing for last months (maybe even a year) and I came to the point where I guess that I have great breathing control, always breathing pretty low from the diaphragm. That helped my support greatly so I guess that my breathing and my support are just fine and under control.
2) I can sing pretty demanding songs right now since I fixed my breathing. It's usually rock, but I try to sing with not much rasp in my voice (I rarely do it because I know the risks)

...and that's all fine, but still I find that after singing for 30mins/1h or so, I feel kind of tension/soreness, in my LOWER throat (I don't feel that much of tension in higher part of throat). Even with this tension I can still sing same demanding songs, but it doesn't feel nice, right. Of course I stop singing when I feel that tension, I'm just saying how it feels.

Sorry I can't post any audio currently, can't record it, so I tried to explain as much as possible...

So if your breathing and support is fine, and you don't do raspy singing often... what might be the causes to lower throat tension. Any tips?

Thanks,
N.

Re: Lower throat tension...

So is it below the larynx or in the larynx? How long this has been happening? Have you had any vocal "accidents" or abuse lately?

Is your upper body relaxed during singing? Do you push too much downwards?

Re: Lower throat tension...

I feel it just below larynx. Had no any bigger issues or abuse lately, it's just that I feel this lower throat tension after singing for a while. And I can't define what is causing it cause I breath from diaphragm, giving nice support and don't feel that I sing from my throat. I guess it might be that I'm singing too "chesty". May singing chestier cause the damage to lower throat?
