Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

The Falsetto Slide

I must say I am finally starting to get the slide. I stopped exercising for a month and a half during the holidays Is not something I'm proud of. But I have discovered something now. Since I took a step back I'm seeing I was putting too much pressure somewhere in my system. It turned out to be I was elevating my larynx to sing high notes all the time. Then I remember what Jaime said when I accidentally did my first Power push, keep that larynx low. (It seems that otherwise you can get seriously injured I found out through another source). Every time I sang around E4 for a while my voice will hurt and it was me elevating my larynx.

That is the same reason why I was breaking when transcending into full voice while sliding down on the Falsetto slide. My cords were simply jumping from my larynx going back down when they switched positions. I know Jaime and Valerie mention this but they definitively should tune the text to make more emphasis on this part.

the way the book is written dictates how the method is communicated to the student. personally i think it has been miscommunicated for me. the way he says "stay in full voice" gives the impression that you are supposed to get your chest sound and carry it to the high notes when this is wrong, the voice should zip up, but at first zipping up your voice will sound weak and falsettoish. strangely NO vocal method i've seen explains this fact that your high notes at first will sound falsetto ish until you learn how to add power after zipping. this is a big problem because if you don't tell the student this then they are going to expect to have a chest sound all the way up straight away which isn't the case. you are supposed to start softly and gradually add power over months to years as you get better. if you have to push or strain then your not doing it right.
