THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Exercise Routine

First of hello, just purchased Raise Your Voice II

I've been singing for 8 years, had vocal coaching as well as studied at home courses such as Brett Manning and Kevin Richards. Anyways, this one kind of confuses me as far as setting a workout routine? My main goal is to get grittier tones, some influences including, Chris Cornell and Layne Staley. Seems to me there's not really a "set" routine, which I'm use to. Anyways, anybody have any advice on what exercises I should add from the website as far as chest, mix, and head? Just to give you an idea, my range is Eb2-F#5 full voice. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Re: Exercise Routine

Well, falsetto slides, transcending tones and sirens are good for developing range and control in your voice even though you already possess a great range. These 3 are the basic exercises that you can variate (see the book). Maybe then add some grit exercises or other things that you would like to develop. I am just a newbie and I can't do extreme vocals so I leave any grit advices to others...

Re: Exercise Routine

Hey man,

I was thinking of purchasing Breaking the Chains by Kevin Richards. Is it any good. I love RYV but I like trying other methods too.

Re: Exercise Routine

BtC is totally scale-based so if you haven't had enough, get it. It borrows a lot, from 4 pillars, Vocal power and others but has also some scales that I have never heard before. It comes with 2 CDs. It doesn't cover extreme vocals or any niche things like whistle. Author has a great Youtube channel so if you like his videos then maybe it's time to get BtC. Only negative thing about Kevin seems to be his enthuasism with republican party but this doesn't of course have anything to do with singing ;)

Re: Exercise Routine

Thanks for the reply! I think it sounds like something I would find very useful. I do really like Kevin's youtube channel. That's how I found out about him.

I am a conservative republican, so I don't see that as a bad thing, bro.

Thanks again for your input.

Ben
