THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Singing with my fingers

So, I tried to do the transcending tone exercise with my finger on the root on my tongue.
The goal was to make sure my tongue don't buckle up
and if the back of my throat stays open.
The thing I found out is that my tongue kinda raise up and stiffens a bit on the back of the throat.
It's a really small movement and buckle, I don't even gag because of it.

1.Is it O.K for the tongue to do so?
2.Is it O.K for me to exercise with my finger in my throat to attain the goals described above?

Re: Singing with my fingers

Watch yourself in a mirror without your fingers in your mouth... Do you have the "U" shape during the transcending tone? If not, your tongue if getting tensed and even the slight buckle up you're feeling is too much. To relax your tongue do a silent "k" with the back of your tongue against your soft palate to release the tension from time to time.

Re: Singing with my fingers

I'll try that!
Thank you VERY VERY much oiselle! :)

This Is not about the fingers any more but it's still on topic:
When I transcend my tone, Is it possible that I will start it from a COMPLETELY breathy tone (no pitch t all) and to be able to transcend to full voice?
Or it would be a wrong cordination and I should start at another point?

maybe from vocal fry?

Re: Singing with my fingers

Usually, when the first note is wrong it thorough off the other ones too so I would really try to hit the note with a clean resonant tone and then transcend. Take a big enough breath and let out your voice on that pitch as if you were sighing.
