THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Many General Questions that I'd be flattered if you could help me with...

2) How do you wanna sound?

Thats how you should think, usually in singing there are no real rights/wrongs. You choose how you wanna sound and we will try our best to help you get there :P

Jens, I'm not sure how I want to sound... Good I guess... Erm, I like voices that have bite, but aren't all about the high frequencies. If I had to sound exactly like a certain singer (I know that isn't what you're saying, but I'm gonna use this anyway) I'd say either Miljenko Matijevic, Sebastian Bach, Chris Cornell or Freddie Mercury... Quite an odd combination of selections, I know. I'd be happy with anything that sounded good tbh.

4) not sure if this is truly a technique problem or just your taste, i'd have to hear it. you can always change the bass and treble in your voice by where you place the mic. as a recording tool: if you want more bass when you record, hold the mic higher around your head, if you want more treble hold it lower around your chest (I KNOW THIS MAY SOUND CONTRARY TO WHAT YOU'D EXPECT, BUT IT IS THE CASE WHEN RECORDING. LOGIC GOES OUT THE WINDOW WHEN YOU RECORD, TRY IT AND SEE FOR YOURSELF)

Phil, thanks for this. I've never heard of that before but will ensure I try this the next time I record. I'll report back to you my experience with this after.

Pardon? Dunno where you live but you must have some very weird doctors...

LOL! I did think this a bit too... I imagined that you'd go in with a cold and they'd slice your nose off or something. Cool though =]
