THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: How did you increase your range?

i think transcending tone and correct support (abdominal breath) are the keys in extending range.

scales really help me more in an "overall singing skill developer" rather than specific range. i find it just improves your voice as a whole.

scales have helped me pitch-wise more than working singular notes. problem with working singular notes is that i found it doesn't carry over as well. so now i do both, and it works.

i amdoing a lot of scale work, and it's helping my singing voice in all ways. i use jaime's method and thomas appel's methods together, works great.

i think when jaime says that scales aren't important he's saying them because he's done them a million times and has gotten all the value he needs from them, i think you shoudln't throw something out unelss you've put the hours in it already. either way, i know that i definately need them in my training.

Practicing every day!

Re: How did you increase your range?

I started with scales (Thomas Appell's program) but didn't see any range increase as far as I can remember. I think Thomas' program could have helped if I had done it 6-12 months. But the system is badly edited: how many hundred times you want to listen his explanations when doing the exercise? Ok, that could have been re-edited in audio software but isolation method with keyboard suits me. I can do exercises as slow as I want and repeat note when there is a problem.

I think transcending tone started to change my voice and I found my higher range. But it's hard to say which exercise was the best. That said, I do isolation method 5-6 times a week and supply with scales from various programs when there is free time.

I know I need scales because I make often mistakes. So to conclude: TTs, sirens and scales for me! :)

Ps. if you read The Modern Vocalist forum, mr. Steven Fraser, who knows A LOT about the voice, often recommends messa di voce and siren exercise for voice strengthening :)
