Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

i've never had any issue with producing grit, i could "just do it" when i began singing. of course it used to hurt my throat, but once i learned the proper breathing and support from jaime's book problem solved. I think the way I learned to do it was by speaking in a grit voice kind of like christian bale does in the newer batman films. if you can't do it on a speaking tone you'll probably find it harder to sing with it, so master it on speaking first maybe? i'm no expert, but maybe this helps.

Ahhhh, that could be a good exercise. I've been working on the Low Grit exercises and i'm getting better at transitioning from clean to gritty, but sometimes it seems like i'll have it gritty, and then the grit kind of drops out. I've been getting better at it and it doesn't happen as much, so maybe that's just happening due to a lack of coordination.

I could never do grit. Every time I try it, it either tickles my throat or burns it. I don't know what the secret is.

Do it on a very open throat, feel the tone getting "bigger" at the same time as adding grit. That's what I do and it seems to work all right.

Love Melissa's videos but i personally think that a rising larynx causes more restriction. larynx positioning has nothing to do with grit, as you'll soon learn if we EVER get screaminglessons.com launched!!!! They are working on the site this week.

Jaime i tend to disagree with your comment, one of the things with grit or distortion is a twanged kindo whiny setting to protect the throat.
A babywhine(twang) will almost exclusivly have a high position, and thus are preferred when your starting out on singing with grit/distortion.
Then lateron you can lower the larynx if a darker more manly soundcolor is wanted.

So does this mean that when you want to add grit, you have to widen your mouth (like when you wanna be whiney)?

I sort of agree with Jens. I think maybe Melissa uses a high larynx to help introduce the twangy kind of grit, but it seems like you could get a similar style by just incorporating a little pharyngeal.

Twang and pharyngeal is the same thing. Twang is more or less the voicefunction, but pharyngeal refers to that voicefunction but in a certain plac in the range.
