THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Breathing from the diaphragm

It's not complicated. Let your breath expand your abdomen all around the bottom of your rib cage. If you have to pus out your stomach you're doing it wrong. Let your stomach come out on its own. Breathe from the bottom up. Feel the air again your from and back lower ribs.

Val

Yes, the problem is i can't do it while standing up or sitting down. So, you are supposed to visualize the air flowing from below to the top instead of from the top right?

Well, anyway. I'd want to know if by doing these exercises I'll be able to do it while sitting down or standing up.

Re: Breathing from the diaphragm

Why can't you do it? All you have to do is relax and breathe! It's easy. You're trying too hard...

Re: Breathing from the diaphragm

do you have jaime's book? i assume you do, if you read the section on breathing thoroughly the answer is clearly there:

lay on the floor with a heavy book on the stomach, breathe from the stomach so that your belly protrudes lifting up the book. thomas appell calls this "abdominal breathing", doing this should expand the ribs. now after you've taken this breath if you hiss it out your abs should contract, and you should have alot of pressure that you can release as you will. seriously its all in the book, you need to read it several times and not skip over areas.

Re: Breathing from the diaphragm

I always thought that breathing was something really difficult because coaches would always stress its importance to the 10th power. It turns out I have always been breathing correctly. Like the guys above me said, it's actually easy. Just don't let your chest expand...if it expands, it should do so ALL ON ITS OWN. Put your hands on the sides of your body, inhale...and feel the ribs expanding, "pushing" your hands out. That's diaphragmatic breathing. When you add downwards support, you will even feel the diaphragm (right under the chest in the middle) expand slightly outwards. Sometimes it gives me an "elevated" feeling when I add that support.

Hope this helps!
