THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Is this almost impossible to sing??

I'm starting to believe that songs like that ARE possible to sing for people who couldn't do it before, with the right practise. It takes a while, maybe a few years. But note that if you try to sing this stuff, using the WRONG technique, you can try for a million years and never get there. Follow instructionals like RYV and CVT and you have more hope. You can also get in contact with some of the people here on MSN and chat with them for more help. I've done that and it really helped.

In this type of singing, one of the tricks is to get rid of the vocal weight that you normally have in your low notes, your "chest voice" if you will. Then you have to have that "twang". Before you sing it with grit, you need to be able to sing it in head voice with twang with relatively little effort in your throat. Then you can try to add grit on top of that, making sure that you squeeze as little as possible in your throat (in fact, it's can be helpful to not think of a "squeeze" at all). Try to go from a fairly low volume, high pitch note to a gritty sound and at the same time, try to increase the volume as little as you can, while staying as relaxed as you can. So it's often helpful to keep the volume very little on those high notes BEFORE you add the grit - otherwise you may need TOO much effort to add the grit.

Re: Is this almost impossible to sing??

thanks, jonpall, that was helpful. Yeah, I tried singing it early today and it was so friggin' difficult to add that grit when your voice is so high up in the clouds. But I'm gonna nail this... and it won't take me years, it'll take me a few months!;)

The thing i have noticed about full voice is, yes it may take some getting used to, the co-ordination of resonance and airflow etc. So this can take time, depening on what it is you need to develop.
YEars, well it depends on how much you put in. I don't think it will happen over night. If you have been singing for a while and develping your voice it is still going to require effort to get it. And just sing sing sSING as much as you can with the techniques in RYV, and in a matter of weeks you will see improvement, if you stick at it and understand the correct way of doing it. I think its the transition stage of waiting for the voice to click, adjust and get stronger with the techniques that seems like forever.
