THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: OMG OMG OMG!!!! SOO happy!!!

i just found out that the siren thing is NOT what i was doing at all
i'm probably gonna start a new thread soon about what i really was doing, but i'll summarize..i just figured it out, cuz i finally did it again
___
ok, so i went to my piano and tried to do some sirens. because i have a hard time differentiating between the right way to do it, and pulling chest, i was straining a lot, and only got up to like an E or an F above middle C.
but then i just started messing around, and i hit the B again! (and later, i pulled it up and realized i could hit an F#5 with this voice)
so once again, i tried to figure out what i did.
So i kept doing it.
it turns out, the "big sound" that sounds to me like a very rocky balboa tone, although in one of your posts you say you don't want that sound, causes me to pull chest. not to say that this can't be fixed, but it doesn't really work for me as of now.
but when i forget about the technique and just do a siren, i use a very nasaly pharyngeal sound, like the nay nay nays in SS. ironically, the nay nay nays were always the hardest for me, and caused me to strain. but when i use it only at my break point, it brings me up into my "full" head voice.
the only problem is (and this is where it gets interesting...) the sound causes me to make a vocal fry sound up until around Ab. so basically, i'm unintentionally frying my way through my break, like brett manning does sometimes, only louder.
i'll put up a video or recording soon, but until i hear someone's opinion on it, i'm not gonna do it again, cuz i kinda feel like it's messing up my voice.
it sounds very groggy.
but i can do it without a tight throat, which is good
