THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: Practicing when other people can hear you

I like that dying chicken sound;)

Re: Practicing when other people can hear you

I think about this a lot in my apartment, too. Getting hung up on it really messes with your technique because you start bracing your voice in apprehension.

Something that helps me is practicing in my bathroom with the bathroom fan on. The fan doesn't stop any sound from crossing to the other room, but the white noise in the background makes you feel less self concious compared to a quite room.

Jaime, I just noticed the PTD-1 breathing trainer in your breathing workout book. That got me thinking, does that thing muffle your voice too? A mask like that that reduces vocal volume would be awesome for practicing at night.

Re: Practicing when other people can hear you

Well this is a hardone, only sollution is not caring or trying to find a spot where noone can hear you:P

I trained distortions at my úniversity people though I was completly crazy haha
But i understand them i sounded(sounds)like im raping a bear.

Re: Practicing when other people can hear you

One solution would be to train in your car. Or find some hours where people will probably not hear you.

Re: Practicing when other people can hear you

I think you need to grow a thicker skin, that's the only thing that worked for me. I went through a phase of not practising because of other people being in the house and my voice went so downhill it wasn't even funny. Now I just scream my head off anyway.

Re: Practicing when other people can hear you

I am kind of going through the same thing. I have had Jaime's book for a long time, but haven't put the time into getting my voice where I want it to be. I am a guitarist who sang mainly backup vocals, but now I want to get to the point where I can sing lead vocals on my own songs, so I am re reading RYV and actually working on my voice.

I feel weird practicing singing with my wife in the house because it is not in my comfort zone like the guitar is. I am going to throw caution to the wind and just practice, because otherwise I will never find time if I wait until no one else is home. I think a good way to think about it is that if we keep practicing then eventually the people listening to us will eventually tell us how much better it sounds.
