THE VOICE CONNECTION
SOUND OFF

Welcome to The Voice Connection Sound Off; a forum for users of books like Raise Your Voice, Melody to Madness, The Ultimate Breathing Workout, and Unleash Your Creative Mindset, as well as a place for Vendera Vocal Academy members to interact.

This message board was created so that singers could come together and "sound off" to help support each other during vocal development and the creative process of unleashing the creative spark that occurs when writing and producing music. Currently, myself and vocal coaches Ben Valen, Ray West, and Ryan Wall are here to respond periodicially to your questions, with new vocal coaches coming soon. But, feel free to help each other too:)

This board is here for you to ask questions about my and my fellow coach's books, videos, and MP3 programs, as well as offer others help with our vocal techniques. You may also post videos of yourself and your band to share your music and ask for critiques.

Please refrain from negative comments, profanities, spamming, and inappropriate criticisms of vocal methodologies, vocal coaches, and singers. All negative posts will be deleted and subject to banning without question. I will not respond to negative posts, because, as Mark Twain once said, “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” With that said, positive criticism is welcome because that is how you'll grow as a singer during the training process.

Re: singing high without heaps of volume

great replies guys, much appreciated, i'll get back to working on both these ideas. saw your posts capehill awhile back, you had the same problem i'm having now didn't you.

Re: singing high without heaps of volume

I have at least three problems with TT:

1) break. Still very audible. Must keep slowing down and practising...

2) going to reinforced falsetto. This was confusing in the beginning because I could feel the resonance in my head. But different tone told me I'm doing wrong. I started thinking more about resonance instead of volume and cured this over time.

3) landing on the wrong, lower, pitch. I have still some issues but my coordination has improved. Still needs work, focus and more breath support.

Re: singing high without heaps of volume

Keep in mind that although your goal is high notes, you must work on the low notes as well. When I was attempting high notes I found I started to plateau. So I was a bit discouraged from them and decided to work on lower notes and my passagio. By doing this I strengthened my voice all around and found that I was not only able to hit my highest notes easier, but I was slow making gains again.

Remember the vocal folds zip up, meaning that support does not just come from breathing/diaphragm. It also comes from the ability to keep those fold together. As Jaime states in RYV, think of the voice like a pyramid. As you go higher the voice thins out but also like a pyrmid you need a strong base or it will collapse.

You'll get there

Re: singing high without heaps of volume

Thanks for the tip John, I've noticed this also. But I think I'll work even harder on the lower end now

Re: singing high without heaps of volume

Here's a good tip... Do the TT with a lip roll. Start is on the lowest falsetto note in your range. If that note is too low, then go up a couple notes until it's comfy. When you can do it smoothly a few times try it on the 5 pure vowels. When you feel like one note is really, really secure, then go to the next. Don't sacrifice quality for range. When you start to lose your tone, just go back down and do lots of more reps of the ones that sound good. In the words of Jim from the Metal Method DVD... I'm sure you'll find the results... amazing. (Big muscled up guy crosses his arms and shakes his head yes)... ...

Re: singing high without heaps of volume

thanks for the tip, i'll give it a shot tonight. did you get this from the "metal method dvd"? if so i'll look into it. btw do you mean lip roll as in doing "bbb" like a crappy car engine?

Re: singing high without heaps of volume

No.. Its not from the video, but the work ethic and mentality certainly is. Jim is hardcore as they get.

Re: singing high without heaps of volume

He means lip bubbles just like in the book. If you aren't for sure how they should be produced or how they should sound, watch my videos and listen to the audio.
