Hello Forum, would anyone out there have any knowledge of the origins of a department store somewhere in Sheffield called Banners? I am wondering if it had it's origins in a Banner family from Kimberley, Notts that settled in Sheffield, some of whom were drapers.

There have been quite a lot of threads on Banners at http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk . One poster wrote:

"John Banner opened his first shop in 1873. The big one we knew and loved was built between 1927 and 1933"

I don't know the source of that statement though.

The building in Attercliffe is still there.

Once again, the Sheffield Indexers have come up with the goods, many thanks Elaine and Hugh. After further digging, I can confirm it was my 4th cousin twice removed John Banner (Mar qtr 1851 Kimberley, Notts - 7 July 1930 Sheffield) who founded the firm. I see from the web the building still stands at Attercliffe, would anyone know if the business is still going?

No the business is not going now - the building houses a number of offices & shops. Many of us golden oldies recall in the 1950s going there for our whitsuntide clothes paid for by a 'check' our mothers obtained from the tally man. If a £20 check was taken out then £21 would eventually be paid back on a weekly basis. The shop had the old type shuttle cage system that took the money to the cashiers office in a brass 'thingy' - can't think of the correct name but we actually have one of the originals from Banners. Someone is sure to tell me the correct name - I can't be the only golden oldie on site. Sometimes Banners checks surface on ebay.

PS it had an old wooden escalator that I believe was the first one in Sheffield and was finally condemned around 1979/80ish. Just realised I have a print of Attercliffe in a wooden frame with Banners on it that I bought some yeras ago - 1950s style
