Message:   The ICCF server problem with logging people off, even after they clicked "Remember login", seems to be solved. I have not experienced any problems in Internet Explorer or Firefox since the fix. If you wish to remain logged in, even after closing/opening your browser, just remember to click the checkbox "Remember login" when you log in.

Some people are unhappy with the game move display on the game page. This is due to the reorganization of the game page so people with limited computer screen space will have the vital information available without scrolling up and down. Moving the text boxes to the right of the chess board limited space available for the move display. If there are enough moves to exceed the space available, it becomes necessary to scroll down to see the later moves. If the board size (as dictated by the size the user selects for pieces under the "Board" menu) is too small the stuff to the right of the board is so limited in size that the move display is badly effected. The best solution is to increase the size of the board (select larger pieces ... I prefer size 36 or larger). This insures several lines of moves are displayed and shows the slider at the right well.

Note to Firefox users. Upgrading to the new version 2.0.0.3 will probably make it impossible to use Drag & Drop for making moves. This new version in not compatible with the drag & drop feature. I recommend sticking to Firefox version 1.5 or earlier till they update Firefox to a later version without the current incompatibilities.

Crosstables. I understand that crosstable design will be improved as time allows. I have personally asked for some improvements, but getting the basic system working properly is the first order of business. I think our programmer Martin Bennedik is doing a fabulous job. With such a complex system there are going to be bugs and mistakes will be made, but Martin is quick to respond and has worked very hard and effectively to improve the system. Some will point out that some of these bugs should have been eliminated before putting the new system on the production server. But there is always a balance. Instead of further delaying converting to the new system, with its many improvements, it can be useful to update to a less-than-perfect system. Also, as a tester I can say that it is impossible to find every bug ahead of time. Some display issues that may seem obvious to users can slip by the limited number of testers (all volunteers, and it's not easy to get people to volunteer for this job). I think the new server system is a huge improvement with new, very useful features. I can do things that were impossible before. Some new tournament types are now possible for the first time. The elimination of frames makes linking to individual pages (such as crosstables) so much better.

So I publicly congratulation our programmer Martin Bennedik, Alan Borwell (Chairman of the Webserver Development Steering Committee (WDSC)), Gino Figlio (Webserver Manager and Helpdesk guru) and others who have contributed to the current state of the webserver project. Besides the many obvious upgrades for users there are also many useful additions and improvements for administrators who perform the vital tasks of tournament organization, directing, rating, etc. More improvements are on the way, but this does take a little time. This update is Phase 3. There is a long list of updates for Phase 4 already being planned.

Sorry for the length of this posting.

Franklin
